Govt. plans to cover entire nation under BS-IV norms

Govt. lifts ban on 15-year old cars

After the recent announcement on the BS-V and BS-VI timeline, government is now planning to cover the entire nation under BS-IV norms by April 2017. This will happen in three phases in the first phase BS-IV would come into force by October 2015 in states like Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir except Leh and Kargil districts and some parts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

While Odisha, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, Daman & Dui, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Andaman & Nicobar and some districts of Mahrashrta and Gujarat would be covered in second phase by April 2016. And in the final phase entire nation would be covered under BS-IV norms.

According to an official of Road & Transport ministry, "The sale and registration of vehicles not meeting the new emission norms won't be allowed in the country from April 2017 and only Bharat Stage compliant four-wheeler vehicles will be manufactured”.

BS-IV was first introduced in April 2010 in national capital region, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahemdabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Surat, Agra, Lucknow, Secunderabad and Solapur. With the addition of twenty cities in October 2014 and thirty cities in April 2015.

Summer care for cars

With this notification coming from government, car manufactures have to upgrade their existing models which are currently running on BS-III norms. To name a few, Sumo, Tavera, Xylo, Bolero and Indigo eCS would be some the models which might get an upgrade or would be phased out for Indian car market.

Apart from this announcement, government is also talking to oil marketing companies such as India oil and Bharat petroleum to install solar-powered charging units in order to promote electric vehicles. Also read: Petrol pumps to provide charging points for EVs
