Forget Chevrolet Spin MPV, Get Ready For New Beat, Beat Activ And Essentia

The sub-10 lakh rupee MPV market is getting super-competitive with pricing. There's the Mobilio with the Honda badge and edgy styling on one hand and the home-grown Maruti Ertiga on the other. The Ertiga even got a price drop in the Delhi due to the relaxed VAT on hybrid cars. This makes it extremely difficult for Chevrolet to bring an MPV in the space with a competitive pricing as Chevrolet neither has the economies of scale in its favour nor does it have a hybrid powertrain readily available.

All of that means that it doesn't make good business sense to invest in an MPV at this point of time. Chevrolet is instead re-routing its resources to fast track the development of the next-gen Beat hatchback. The same platform will also accommodate the Beat Activ's crossover body style and the Essentia compact sedan.

President and managing director of General Motors India, Kaher Kazen, said:
These new Chevrolet vehicles clearly demonstrate we are listening to our customers and are being led by their desire for small cars with more content and choice. They were distinctly developed for the Indian market. However, there is no doubt they will have global appeal.

Chevrolet is focused on delivering to our Indian customers the safe, high-quality vehicles they want backed by the world-class customer experience they deserve. We have a strong plan to launch at least five new Chevrolet models within the space of 24 months, including the new Trailblazer, new Beat, Essentia, new Cruze and Beat Activ.

The Beat hatchback caught good fire initially but its sales are declining consistently in the last couple of years, which is part of the reason why Chevrolet and its partner dealerships have been offering massive discounts for quite some time to move it off the floor. The 'diesel rocket' Cruze is also not doing well despite a mild facelift.

Recently launched Tata Tiago is generating a good amount of interest among potential buyers due to its design, features and value-for-money sticker price. While the Tiago is keeping Tata Motors happy, it's definitely affecting the ageing Beat's sales figures. That's another reason for Chevy to get the Beat ready for prime time and tackle the competition.
