Ford Planning New India-Specific Sub-4m SUV

  • May 14, 2019

American multinational automobile major, Ford is planning to introduce a new sub-4m sports utility vehicle (SUV) particularly made for the Indian market. The company has already taken up plans to launch at least one new SUV each year in India beginning from next year. The first in the series will be a mid-sized SUV which will compete with the MG Hector and Jeep Compass. It will be followed by a smaller SUV to rival the likes of Hyundai Venue and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. The new sub-4m car has already been codenamed BX744.

The BX744 will be available only in India and is expected to be introduced in 2021. It will be based on the company’s own platform and manufactured locally in India to keep production costs and the final retail price low. That aside, the Michigan headquartered company has also joined hands with Mahindra to use the latter’s manufacturing platform and SUV powertrains.

Ford already has a presence in the sub-4m Indian car segment with the EcoSport. The car, launched in 2013, has been popular with the masses. It got an upgrade in 2017 and will be equipped with the BS-VI compliant diesel and petrol motors later this year.

The BX744 could be a replacement for the EcoSport in India. Ford, however, is unlikely to withdraw the car in entirety because of its popularity. The company may retain the EcoSport badge for better brand recall. The BX744 is expected to be available both in the diesel and petrol versions.

The new sub-4m Ford BX744 SUV will compete with the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the upcoming Hyundai Venue. It will also rival Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, the upcoming Renault HBC, Kia Motors’ new sub-4m SUV based on the Hyundai Venue, and a new subcompact car from Jeep.
