Fifth-Generation (2020) Honda City Debuts In Thailand, India Launch Next Year

  • Nov 26, 2019

Japanese automobile major Honda has launched the fifth-generation (2020) City sedan in Thailand and the car now looks boxier than its existing version. The new model has more prominent edges which improve its upmarket feel. The all-new City, from the front, looks similar to the Amaze subcompact sedan.

The 2020 Honda City will be hauled by a turbocharged, 1.0-litre petrol motor which delivers 122PS maximum power and 173Nm peak torque. The engine is mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and returns a mileage of 23.8kmpl under the Thai testing standard. The car will also have a new, 1.5-litre petrol unit, paired with Honda’s compact i-MMD mild hybrid technology which recently debuted in the latest Jazz premium hatchback. The India-specific version of the fifth-generation Honda City, like its predecessor, will also get a 1.5-litre diesel engine option. The motor will be soon upgraded to meet the upcoming BS-VI emission standard.

The new City has a minimalist dashboard unlike the asymmetrical unit in the outgoing version. The centre is dominated by an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display unit flanked by the central air-conditioning vents on both sides. The dashboard sports a three-dial climate control system, an analogue instrument cluster, along with new steering-mounted controls. The Thai-specific 2020 Honda City gets an all-black cabin, though some of its trims in the India-specific model may get a two-tone treatment.

The safety equipment of the 2020 Honda City includes six airbags, multi-angle rear-view camera, hill start assist, vehicle stability control, and antilock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD).

The City has been a bestseller for Honda ever since it was introduced in India back in the mid-1990s. The latest version is expected to be rolled out in India by mid-2020 and may command an ex-showroom price of ₹10 lakh. It will continue to lock horns with the Volkswagen Vento, Skoda Rapid, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Toyota Yaris, and the Hyundai Verna.
