Fiat India has taken a new direction today; after years of offering good but not very exciting cars it has now launched two of the hottest hatches the country has seen. The Fiat Abarth Punto and Fiat Abarth Avventura are now the most powerful hatchbacks (faux-crossover in the Avventura's case) you can buy in the Rs. 10-lakh segment. While overall design remains the same, both the cars get enough changes to make onlookers know they are different - sportier in fact -, under the hood is a powerful turbocharged petrol motor developing 147PS/142PS respectively, the chassis has been modified to handle the increased performance and the cabin has been spruced up to match.

The highlight for the new Abarth Punto and Abarth Avventura is the fact that these are not mere sticker-jobs. Fiat has made many changes to exploit the potential of the Punto platform. The first of the many changes is that the gently-rising hood now houses the 1.4-litre T-Jet turbocharged petrol motor which was firstseen on the Linea T-Jet. The engine has been tuned for more power and torque than before though - on the Abarth Punto it develops 147PS @ 5500rpm and 212Nm @ 2000-4000 rpm, while on the Abarth Avventura it develops 142PS @ 5500rpm and 210Nm @ 2000-4000rpm. The 5-speed manual transmission remains and has been reworked to complement the engine. Power is sent to the front wheels, both the cars get 16-inch 'Scorpion' alloy-wheels shod with 195/55 tyres rom Apollo. The suspension has been stiffened, the Abarth Punto is 30mm lower at 155mm than the standard car while the Abarth Avventura continues to have a ground clearance of 205mm. These cars also receive disc brakes all around to keep them from turning into runaways. The hydraulic steering unit from the standard Punto/Avventura remains.

All the performance mods help the Abarth Punto galop to 100 km/h from standstill in 8.8 seconds, while the Punto Avventura does the same in 9.9 seconds. The larger engine also gives the Abarth Punto and Abarth Avventura good mileage figures, which could be achieved if you can keep your right-foot and the devil inside your head under control - while the Abarth Punto has an ARAI-certified efficiency of 16.3 km/l, the Abarth Avventura returns 17.1 km/l.

It's not all go. The Fiat Abarth Punto and Abarth Avventura receive enough styling bits to let even the most uninterested person know that this is no ordinary hatchback. The Abarth Punto gets Abarth logos and stickers, while the the Abarth Avventura gets Fiat logos and 'Powered by Abarth' stickers. The Abarth Punto also gets sporty-stripes in contrast colours, a prominent scorpion sticker on the roof, contrast painted mirrors - both the cars get 'Scorpion' multi-spoke alloy wheels etc. While the Abarth Punto is being offered in Pearl White and Hip Hop Black paint options (both with red-sripes), the Abarth Avventura is available with Pearl White and Exotica Red paint option.

The Abarth Punto/Avventura at first glance are the same as the respective standard models, but here too there are enough elements to make them stand out. Abarth branding on the steering-wheel (for the Abarth Punto, regular Fiat badges on the Avventura), seats, door-sill etc, along with a redesigned instrument-cluster (with twin-pod design and reworked dials), sporty steel-pedals, contrast double-stitched seats etc. add to the sporty feel of the car.

There are no new additions in terms of equipment on the Abarth Punto and Abarth Avventura, both get the same equipment as the Punt Emotion and Avventura Emotion variants respectively. This means that the cars get features like electrically adjustable ORVMs, power windows with auto-down for all doors, rear windshield wiper and defogger, remote keyless entry, height-adjustable driver seat, til-adjustable steering-wheel, electrically-openable boot-lid, Bluetooth-compatible music-system, steering-mounted audio-controls, driver-information display on the instrument console, dead-pedal, rear A/C vents etc.

Safety systems include dual front-airbags, ABS+EBD, 3-point ELR seat-belts with pre-tensioners and load limiter, automatic door-lock, fire-prevntion system, engine immobiliser etc.
