What you see here in the picture is the eighth generation (B8) of the Volkswagen Passat. After revealing tiny bit of details about the new car earlier in forms of sketches and drawings, Volkswagen has finally pulled the covers off the next-generation Passat. The new Passat was showcased at an overnight event held in Berlin, prior to its premiere in the upcoming Paris Motor Show. The next generation Passat is based on VW’s renowned platform- MQB (Modular Transverse Toolkit, or in simple words a common platform which will form the basis for future VW group cars for various bodystyles). The new Passat is specific to European markets only and is expected to go on sale in the coming week of July, 2014.

As seen in the pictures, Volkswagen will be launching the new Passat in sedan and estate versions simultaneously. Visually, the new Passat breaks away from the conventional and sensible styling it had before. The aggressive front fascia adorns LED headlights along with a three-slate grill. The new Passat appears to be sharper with taut lines and accentuated creases running along the whole body. The rear end has also been given mild chrome treatment with dual inverted trapezoidal exhaust tips on either side.

Mechanically, the new Passat is likely to receive new or upgraded four-cylinder direct injection petrol and common rail diesel engines. Power will transmitted via either a six-speed manual or seven speed dual clutch gearbox with automatic stop/start function.

Based on the MQB platform, the new Passat now sheds 85kg of weight from its body compared to the outgoing model. Which results in making the new car lower, longer, wider and more fuel efficient than its predecessor. Thanks to MQB again, the new Passat will also benefit from latest gadgetry as seen on other cars of the VW group. This includes a fully digital instrument cluster called the Active Information Display (first seen on the upcoming Audi TT if you remember). An extendable head-up display along with an App-based rear seat entertainment for tablet computers is also promised by Volkswagen on the new Passat. Safety features like Front Assist plus City Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring, Emergency Assist, Trailer Assist and Traffic Jam Assist etc., will be available on the new Passat as well.

Considering the fact that we in India have been receiving the Euro-spec Passat thus far, we expect to see the new model to make it to India in the coming time. Albeit, that will only happen if Volkswagen is not working on a different market strategy for our country.
