Datsun To Introduce AT Versions Of GO, GO+ Next Month

  • Sep 14, 2019

Japanese automobile manufacturer Datsun is all set to launch the continuously variable transmission (CVT) models of the GO and GO+ in October. Industry sources suggest that with more Indian customers demanding automatic transmission (AT) even in small cars, the company has decided to tow the line. Competitors of the Datsun GO, like Hyundai Santro, Maruti Suzuki WagonR, and the Tata Tiago, come with the optional automated manual transmission (AMT).

Datsun, however, is expected to offer the more sophisticated CVT technology on the GO and GO+. Both cars are hauled by the same 3-cylinder 1.2-litre petrol motor which produces 68PS maximum power and 104Nm peak torque. The engine, until now, was only available with a 5-speed manual gear system. Both the GO and GO+, according to Datsun, return a mileage of 19.83kmpl. The engine still conforms to the BS-IV emission standard but Datsun reportedly has plans to upgrade it soon.

The CVT system in the GO and GO+ will be borrowed from the Nissan Micra. Nissan is the parent company of Datsun. The CVT is expected to increase the fuel efficiency of the engine. Most automobile experts consider CVT as a necessity for compact hatchback cars. The CVT’s cost, however, is much higher than the AMT used by Datsun’s rivals.

The GO+ multipurpose vehicle (MPV) didn’t have any direct competitor, until the recent launch of the Renault Triber. The Renault MPV didn’t come with AT during its launch but is expected to get the same soon.

The CVT is likely to be offered in only the top-level trims of the GO and GO+. The Datsun GO holds a starting price of ₹5.17 lakh while the GO+ has a sticker price of ₹5.94 lakh in Delhi. The introduction of the CVT is expected to lead to a hike of around ₹60,000 each on both cars. However, even with the hike, the GO and GO+ will be the most affordable cars in their respective segments.
