Datsun Reshuffles redi-GO Series, Driver Airbag Now Standard

  • Jul 19, 2019

Japanese automobile manufacturer Datsun has added a driver-side airbag to the redi-GO, its entry-level compact hatchback in India. The car was fitted with the antilock braking system (ABS) earlier this year. The car also gets a few extra safety features as standard now, resulting in an updated variant list. Other standard safety features added to the red-GO includes rear parking sensors, a speed alert system, and front passenger seatbelt reminder.

Most of the newly introduced safety features have been part of the standard equipment package in many of redi-GO’s peers. The car’s month-on-month sales have been rather disappointing in the segment dominated by Maruti Suzuki. Except for the new features, the mechanicals of the redi-GO remains the same.

The Nissan-owned company has also updated the price of the various redi-GO trims. The car earlier commanded an ex-showroom price between ₹2.68 lakh to ₹4.29 lakh. The entry-level redi-GO D trim is now pegged at ₹2.80 lakh, an increase of ₹12,000. The top-level redi-GO S Smart Driver Auto version is now priced at ₹4.37 lakh, which includes a premium of ₹8,000.

Besides upgrading the prices, Datsun has also discontinued several trims in the redi-GO series. All the (O) variants, below the T trim, have been eliminated. The redi-Go is still hauled by an 800cc petrol engine which produces 72Nm peak torque and 54PS maximum power. Some of the higher variants get a 1.0-litre petrol motor which outputs 91Nm peak torque and 68PS maximum power. Both 3-cylinder engines are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission system. The 1.0-litre motor comes with an optional automated manual transmission (AMT) system. Both engines, however, are BS-IV compliant. Datsun is yet to clarify whether the engines will be upgraded to meet the BS-VI norms set to be implemented from 1 April.

The Datsun redi-GO’s main rivals are the Maruti Suzuki Alto and the Renault Kwid. Both the Kwid and Alto, however, offers more standard features compared to the redi-GO.
