Upcoming: This Is How Chevrolet Beat ACTIV Crossover Would Look Like

  • Dec 01, 2016
Chevrolet debuts Spark ACTIV - the design inspiration behind the upcoming Beat ACTIV Crossover - at the LA Motor Show.

Chevrolet showcased a striking fluorescent painted Beat ACTIV Crossover Concept at the 2016 India Auto Expo that grabbed quite a few eyeballs. The crossover is inspired by the Spark ACTIV crossover that is production-ready now and will see daylight in the US market as early as Q1-2017. It is based on the 2017 Spark which is the design inspiration behind the upcoming 2017 Beat that will replace the existing and ageing model in India.

The 2017 Chevrolet Spark is based on a completely new platform and appears bigger than the current Beat in India. Specs however reveal that the dimensions are in the same ballpark and it's only the wheelbase that is 10mm larger. For India, Chevrolet will offer a heavily redesigned version of the current Beat, so no mechanical changes are expected.

The Spark is powered by a 1.4-litre petrol engine in the US that produces a healthy 100PS of maximum power. In India, the engine line-up isn’t as exciting and we get a pair of a fuel efficient diesel and a slightly more powerful petrol engine. The 1.0-litre diesel engine of the Beat is frugal and makes only 57PS of maximum power while its 1.2-litre petrol counterpart makes a decent 78PS. Understandably, the Beat diesel is the more popular of the two with a claimed fuel-efficiency of 25.44kmpl.

Chevrolet is yet to announce the engine line-up for the upcoming Chevrolet Beat for India however chances are that both petrol and diesel options will be retained. The Chevrolet Beat ACTIV will be a mechanical equivalent but a kitted version of the Beat hatchback and will therefore draw power from the same powertrain options as the 2017 Beat.

Standard features on the US-spec Chevrolet Spark include Chevrolet’s MyLink system with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, tilt steering, rear camera, 10 airbags, traction control and hill start assist. The Indian market is a price sensitive one and the 2017 Beat might not flash an as expansive standard feature-list.

However, expect Chevrolet to equip the 2017 Beat with features like electrically foldable and adjustable ORVMs, power windows, push button start-stop, steering wheel mounted audio controls, keyless-entry, fog lamps etc., which the US-spec Spark gets in its 1LT variant on which the Spark ACTIV is based. Similarly, the Beat ACTIV in India might also be based on one of the more feature-rich variants of the 2017 Beat.

The elements that should turn the 2017 Beat into the Beat ACTIV would be:

  • Specific grille pattern with ACTIV nameplate

  • Round fog lamps and fog lamp housings integrated in the front fascia

  • Contrasting wheelhouse moldings and hatchback cladding

  • Rocker moldings

  • Roof rails

Chevrolet has announced the prices for the Spark ACTIV for the US market and it will go on sale in the first quarter of 2017. For India, the Beat and Beat ACTIV are also planned for a 2017 launch.

The Beat ACTIV that was showcased at the 2016 Indian Auto Expo has a different rear design compared to the 2017 Spark ACTIV in the US. It is similar in appearance to the current Beat that we have here and Chevrolet might continue with a similar rear design for the India-spec Beat and Beat ACTIV.

Prices for the Beat petrol start from Rs 3.95 lakh and go upto Rs 5.32 lakh in India. The diesel Beat is priced between Rs 4.95 lakh to Rs 6.35 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi). With the new Beat, Chevrolet might revise the prices a bit but considering the discounts the company offers, the effective ex-showroom prices may not differ by a big margin. The Beat ACTIV should however command a premium over the standard Beat whenever it makes its way into the Indian market.
