Brezza To Get Petrol Engine This Year

  • Sep 06, 2019

Indo-Japanese car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki is all set to introduce a petrol motor in the Vitara Brezza compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) this year itself. The car, in its present avatar, is available only with a diesel engine. The Indo-Japanese automobile manufacturer has already stated that it won’t be selling diesel cars in the BS-VI era which sets in from 1 April. The Vitara Brezza petrol was earlier slated to debut at the 2020 Auto Expo.

Maruti Suzuki is yet to reveal the engine specifications of the Brezza. Industry sources suggest that the car could be hauled by a 1.5-litre motor which produces 105PS maximum power and 138Nm peak torque. The same engine is fitted into the Ertiga multipurpose vehicle (MPV) and the Ciaz sedan. It means that besides the 5-speed manual transmission, the Vitara Brezza will also be available with an optional 4-speed torque converter system.

Other reports suggest that Maruti Suzuki may use a 1.2-litre motor on the Brezza which outputs 83PS maximum power and 113Nm peak torque. A compressed natural gas (CNG) alternative to the diesel engine could be in the offing. The 1.0-litre Boosterjet petrol engine, which hauls the Baleno RS hatchback, is unlikely to be offered in the Brezza since it is an imported unit and would lead to a major price hike of the compact SUV.

The Brezza was launched in 2016 and an upgrade has been long overdue. Maruti may lend a number of upgrades to the Brezza, besides introducing the petrol motor. The diesel Brezza will continue to be sold as long as stocks last since the government has allowed that.

The Brezza is currently hauled by a 1,248cc diesel motor which produces 88PS maximum power at 4,000rpm and 200Nm peak torque at 1,750rpm. The car returns a mileage of 21.7kmpl under city conditions.
