Bentley’s racing inspired Continental GT3-R breaks cover

Bentley’s association with motorsport activities is nothing to write home about. Officially, Bentley had not participated in a racing event since 1930 until they entered in the 2014 edition of the Blancpain Endurance Series. Even more surprising is the fact that Bentley’s race prepped Continental GT3 race car stormed to victory in the Silverstone round of the same series. This is a ‘first’ for any Bentley in 84 years.


Bentley has now announced of launching a limited edition version- the Continental GT3-R, in the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK. The GT3-R is heavily inspired by the GT3 race car, and is aimed at providing the thrills of a racing car on road, but unlike its competitors, it does not compromise with luxury in exchange of weight saving.

Being inspired-from-racecar version, the Continental GT3-R talks more about mathematical expressions than its luxury though. It starts with a 4.0 litre, twin turbo V8 that cranks up to 580 PS of power and 700Nm of torque for the Continental GT3-R. While the GT3-R tries to imbibe the GT3 racecar, underneath it’s based on a standard Continental GT V8. To make it feel more agile then, Bentley has managed to reduce the overall weight of the car by a whopping 100 kilograms vis-à-vis the standard version. With that done, Bentley shortened the gearing and made the Continental GT3-R the fastest accelerating Bentley ever. Now 0-100 km/h comes at a brisk pace of just 3.6 seconds. Short gearing here has reflected in the loss of top speed though, with the Continental GT3-R only managing to do 275km/h as opposed to the 302 km/h of top speed of the standard version. Bentley says that the GT3-R is a grand tourer with race-car performance.


For power transmission, the Continental GT3-R uses a ZF derived 8-speed automatic gearbox with Quickshift and steering mounted paddle shifters. Unlike the Continental GT3 race car, the GT3-R version will be four-wheel drive and not rear-wheel drive, and will feature torque vectoring to manage torque independently for each of the wheels. The Continental GT3-R also gets a lighter titanium exhaust which is acoustically tuned as per its usage on a ‘race’ car.

To bring the Continental GT3-R to a halt, a pair of 420 mm Carbon Silicon Carbide brake discs are installed on the front, while the rear wheels are stopped using 356 mm of brake discs on each of the wheels. The 8-piston brake calipers have been specially finished off in green color scheme to add to the visual appeal of the car.


Apart from the brake pads, the whole car has been tweaked aesthetically with a lot of green paint used inside and out. Inside, there are only 2 seats at the front, which are handcrafted in Alcantara and carbon-fibre. Racing green accents around the steering wheel, dashboard and on seat borders- along with the stitching, give the Continental GT3-R a unique racy feel.

On the outside a new front splitter and a fixed rear wing on the bonnet, both finished in carbon fibre add to the sporty image of the car. Two vents find place on the car’s bonnet to help improve the cooling capacity while the car is on the move. Bentley insists that the dual-tone green and white paint scheme on the outside highlight the Continental GT3-R’s resemblance to the Continental GT3 racing car. An all new set of 21-inch alloy wheels finished in gloss black paint scheme are also designed to complement the motorsports roots of the car.


Bentley will only produce 300 examples of the Continental GT3-R, all of which will be hand-built at company’s facility at Crewe and will be finished in Bentley’s Motorsport division in the UK. Customers will also get a free standard servicing package for the first four years on the purchase. Bookings are now open in the UK with deliveries of the car commencing in late 2014.
