Every year in the month of May, car enthusiasts and Volkswagen followers from across the world descend down to Worthersee in Austria for an annual gathering called GTI-Treffen. The event is so popular among car lovers worldwide that Volkswagen has even made it an ‘official’ stop to showcase their latest projects and developments. Since the festival majorly involves participation from hardcore enthusiasts and speed-lovers, Volkswagen uses this as a platform to showcase some unrealistic and borderline bonkers concept cars, too!

For this year, the event is scheduled to go live on May 13 and is going to be no different. Apart from the fact that Audi will be taking all the limelight this time round. The Ingolstadt-based Volkswagen-owned luxury brand has decided to go completely mental as it heads for the festival. Say hello then to the 600PS Audi TT Clubsport Turbo concept!

As you’d have guessed by now, the concept model uses the company’s TT Coupe as the base car. However, every component on it has now been tweaked and fettled to deliver maximum levels of performance. For example, the concept is 140mm wider than the regular car. The front grille has grown larger, the air splitters are redesigned, there’s a side exhaust and then there’s an unmistakable carbon-fibre-reinforced rear wing that is manually adjustable. The Clubsport Turbo rides on 20-inch alloy wheels that come shod with 275/30 section rubber. Overall, the concept looks menacingly desirable from every angle!

On the inside, the standard car’s rear seats have been removed and in place you get a lightweight titanium roll cage. The climate control has also been junked while most of the interior trim is finished in carbonfibre. Driver and passenger seats are racing-style bucket seats with four-point harnesses. The steering wheel is also revised and now has buttons for the engine starter, drivetrain mode selector, traction control and pit lane speed limiter.

Under the hood, there’s even more rage brewing. The Clubsport concept features a 2.5-litre, twin-turbocharged, five-cylinder engine that churns out 600PS of power and 650Nm of torque. Power is sent to all wheels via a permanent all-wheel drive system and a six-speed gated manual transmission. Yes, a manual!

Since the TT Clubsport Turbo only weighs around 1,400 kilograms, it will sprint to 100km/h from a standstill in just 3.6 seconds. The splurge of power will continue in a similar fashion till it hits a top speed of 310km/h. Stopping power comes from carbonfibre ceramic discs on all four wheels.

The Audi TT Clubsport Turbo also features Audi’s e-turbo tech. Instead of using two exhaust driven turbochargers, the Clubsport uses an electric turbo for low engine rpms and an exhaust driven turbo at higher engine speeds. The advantage of this being a supercharger-esque immediacy which does not come at the cost of efficiency. The electric turbo is powered by a 48V electrical system that takes energy from a regenerative braking system.

The Audi TT Clubsport Turbo concept making it in production form seems highly unlikely at the moment. However, at the same time, the company has confirmed that the ‘e-turbo’ technology will  be available in other production models very soon!
