All-New Maruti Alto Likely To Be Based On Third-Gen Wagon R 2019

  • Jan 30, 2019

With the 2020 crash test regulations looming around the corner, Maruti is set to update the popular Alto to meet the norms. This would mean switching over to a newer more rigid platform, like the one on the new Wagon R.

The new Alto could be based on Suzuki’s Heartect A platform which currently underpins the Ignis and Wagon R. The sturdy and stiff nature of this platform should help it pass the crash test regulations. Another advantage of switching to the Heartect A is more interior space, as seen with the new Wagon R. This platform is not to be confused with the one in cars like the Swift, Dzire or Ertiga. Suzuki’s philosophy of developing a platform is called ‘Heartect’. Likewise, the Heartect A has the characteristics of the platform but is different. Toyota’s TNGA and VW Group’s MQB are examples of other such modular platforms.

Going by the size difference between the old and new Wagon R (56mm longer, 125mm wider), it is safe to assume that the new Alto will also be bigger than the current one. The same 1.0L power plant should also be carried forward. Since this platform is being offered with the larger 1.2L 83PS engine, it could make its way into the Alto. Enthusiasts will rejoice but time will tell if Maruti will offer it though. Earlier, Maruti chairman RC Bhargava confirmed that the company plans to launch two more ‘’all-new’’ cars besides the Wagon R in 2019. The same reliable 1.0L engine will be upgraded to meet the BSVI emission norms without any loss in power.

With the new platform and an upgraded engine, the new Alto will cost more than the current one. Prices could go up between Rs 10,000 – Rs 20,000. Speculated prices for the new Alto are between Rs 3.4 lakh and Rs 4.5 lakh. The most significant hike will be in the top spec variant, due to more features and safety. Expected to be launched in the second half of 2019, the new Alto will compete with the Datsun redi-GO and Renault Kwid.
