New Hyundai Elantra India 3
What is it: All-new Elantra
When will it come: Mid or End 2016
Rivals: Toyota Corolla, Skoda Octavia, VW Jetta
Expected price: Rs 15-19 lakh
Engines: 1.4 petrol (turbo), 2.0 petrol, 1.6 diesel

Hyundai has officially revealed the images of the upcoming 2017 Elantra. The new model will make it Indian debut later this year and will compete with other D segment sedans like the Toyota Corolla and the Skoda Octavia. The new Elantra looks a lot different from the current version which itself received a mild face-lift in April 2015 (read launch report) but has not been doing good numbers for the company. Hyundai sold just 1741 units of the Elantra last year which puts it behind the Corolla, Octavia and the Jetta.

However, the new Elantra looks very promising. While details on the Indian version are still sketchy, the international model looks premium and yet has a sporty appeal. The low and aggressive front end along with Hyundai's signature hexagonal grille steals the limelight and the Elantra finally gets LED day time running lights. The design is functional as well - for example the front wheel air curtains are similar to those on the Sonata hybrid and helps cut air drag. Speaking of which, the new Elantra has a drag coefficient of only 0.27!

The new Elantra is not just about the way it looks but also how it makes a passenger feel on the inside. There is more room for both front and rear passengers and Hyundai has added features to pamper consumers further. For example, the new Elantra gets a massive 7" display along with Hyundai's Blue Link tech (we hope this makes it to India), memory for both driver's seat as well as the positioning of the outside mirror, dual zone air-con, heated front and rear seats etc.

Hyundai claims to have worked hard on lowering NVH levels further. The Elantra was already a great car to be driven in but the new one will sure up the ante. Its lighter and yet has better torsional rigidity too. International versions will get a choice of two all-new petrol mills, a 2.0-litre four-cylinder and a 1.4-litre turbocharged GDI motor. However, knowing India's fetish for oil burners, the Indian version will come with the same 1.6-litre diesel mill as the current car. Both manual and automatic versions will be on offer.

The current Elantra is priced between Rs 14.4 - 16.8 lakh for petrol and Rs 14.9 - 18.2 lakh for the diesel line-up. The new version, given the better looks, premium interiors and more features will surely come with a slightly higher sticker price.
