2016 World Car of the Year award winners

The podium finishers of 2016 World Car of Year awards were announced during New York Motor show. It was the 13th Edition of the awards and saw as many as 73 journalists from 23 countries around the world. The journalists pick up the best choice across 5 categories that are car of the year, performance car of the year, luxury car of the year, design of the year, and lastly, green car of the year - a new segment that was introduced last year.
The eligibilities required the nominees to be on sale since January 1, 2015 to May 31, 2016 in the markets of at least two continents.
The highest award of “World Car of the Year” went to Mazda MX-5, which also took “Word Car Design of the Year” too. The MX-5 competed with Audi A4, and Mercedes-Benz GLC to take the highest award while it competed with Jaguar XE and Mazda CX-3 for the design of the year award.

The award of “World Performance Car of the Year” was given to Audi R8 Coupe. The R8 was competing with Honda Civic Type R and the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe to win the award.

The “World Luxury Car of the Year” award was taken by new BMW 7-Series. Mercedes-Benz S-Class was the winner of this award since last two years. BMW 7-Series saw competition from Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90 to win this category.

Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell vehicle took home the "Green Car of the Year” award. The Mirai was competing with Toyota Prius and Chevrolet Volt to win the award.
