To keep up with the current time’s motoring norms, Mercedes-Benz has updated the 36 year-old Mercedes-Benz G-Class, yet again. The refreshments on the new model comprise cleaner, more efficient, more powerful and Euro 6 compliant engines along with tweaked suspension components. Sales of the revised G-Class are expected to commence around June 2015 in Europe.

The major upgrades, as you also read above, come from under the bonnet. While Mercedes has revised the entire powertrain with minor tweaks here and there, the biggest headline is the introduction of a new 4.0-litre direct-injection twin-turbo V8 engine in the G500 variant. This, if you can recall, is the same engine that does duty in the Mercedes-AMG GT sportscar and the new-gen C63 AMG sedan! The engine, however, has been retuned to produce a lower system output of 422PS and 610Nm on the legendary off-roader. That said, the engine will still propel the high-riding boxy SUV from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.9 seconds.

Elsewhere in the range, the 3.0-litre turbo-diesel in the G350d (Europe-specific) is now rated at 245PS/600Nm, up from 211PS/540Nm in the outgoing model. The 5.5-litre V8 on the G63 variant has also been uprated to produce 27PS more as it now develops 571PS and 760Nm of torque. Likewise, the V12 equipped G65 AMG now produces 630PS (vs. 612PS in the outgoing model) and 1000Nm of peak-torque!

Mercedes has revised the suspension setup across the ‘Geländewagen’ or G-Class range with newly developed shock-absorbers while changes have also been made to the vehicle’s stability control and ABS systems. As an additional feature, automatic start/stop comes fitted as standard in all the variants, except for the G65 AMG. Additionally, the new G500 can be had with an adaptive damping system that lets driver alter settings between sport or comfort modes.

On visual front, all G-Class models now sport flared wheel arches while some will also have revised bumpers. The instrument cluster on all models has been updated as well. Customers also get the choice to paint their G-Class in bright shades of yellow (top model), tomato red, lime green and orange in the new model.

Other bits such as permanent four-wheel drive system, three differential locks, low-range gearbox, and the ladder frame chassis has been carried over from previous years as always.
