Jaguar has taken the wraps of its updated flagship sedan, the XJ. The 2016 Jaguar XJ gets subtle exterior design changes, new luxurious materials on the inside, smart multimedia and connectivity systems, a new diesel motor, a new electric power steering and a host of safety systems.

The Jaguar XJ range has now expanded, thanks to the addition of a new top-of-the-line, 'Autobiography' variant. The complete range of the Jaguar XJ is as follows: XJ Luxury, XJ Premium Luxury, XJ Portfolio, XJ R-Sport, XJR and XJ Autobiography.

Jaguar has not played much with the design of the XJ for this update; Ian Callum's design, even though seven years old, is still a striking one to look at and stands out very well from its competition. Jaguar has given the car a more upright and larger grille, prominent silver surrounds around the lower air-intakes and full LED-headlamps at the front. The 'quad-lamp' design has seen an evolution on the new XJ with new signature LED DRL design ('J-Blade' in Jaguar-speak) and active-bending lamps.

The side-profile remains the same, with the swooping roof-line and the blackened C-Pillar.

At the rear, the cat's claws tail-lamps have given way to LED elements which mimick the LED DRLs at the front. The rear bumper gets a new gloss-black lower lip and a chrome strip to reduce the bulk of the car, oval exhaust finishers complete the look.

The luxurious interiors have not been changed in terms of design, but new materials and new equipment make them more appealing. Each trim is now more luxurious than before, which will make customers feel more special.

The new Autobiography variant is the one that has been highlighted with the update by the company. It will be available only in the long-wheelbase version, which would make it very attractive in the Indian market. Also, it gets semi-anilined leather seats with contrast stiching, a leather headliner, oak inlays, illuminated stainless steel door-sills, stainless-steel air-vents and stainless-steel boot highlights.

The new R-Sport variant gets gloss-back elements on the outside while the interior gets sports seats, sporty steering wheel, sporty-looking door-sills, and piano-black inlays.

The biggest highlight of the new XJ is its advanced infotainment and connectivity systems. Called InControl, the infotainment system consists of a touch-screen based multimedia system backed by an intel quad-core processor and a 60GB solid-state hard-drive connected to an optional 26-speaker, 17-channel, 1300W Meridian surround-sound system.

The touch screen has been designed to mimic a smart-phone, with customisable screens, widgets, pinch-and-zoom functionality, etc. Users can also control the system via voice commands. The system comes with in-built navigation program and in-built maps which can work even in the absence of an internet connection. The InControl App on your phone, whether running on Android or iOS, can be used to program a travel itinerary and upload it into the car's computer later.

The InControl App feature allows users to connect their Android or Apple smart-phones to the car's infotainment system via USB. The system allows certain apps to run of the touch screen of the car for a better connected experience even on the move. Users can also observe the car's statistics through the InControl app, open/close the car remotely, locate their car via a map, set the interior temperature, create a wi-fi hotspot, etc. The InControl system also helps track the car in the event of it getting stolen, or alert emergency services in case the car is involved in an accident.

Individual entertainment systems can be ordered for the benefit of the rear-seat passengers for that extra-luxurious feel. This includes the addition of two 10.2-inch HD screens which fold into the front seats when not needed. Add the digital TV option and Jaguar will add a 100GB hard-drive to store media, with the added bonus of being able to play different media on the individual screens. These screens can be connected to a multitude of external devices, thanks to the availability of USB ports, an HDMI port and a Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) port.

Engine and transmission

The Jaguar XJ range gets a more powerful 3.0-litre, V6 diesel motor which develops a peak power of 300PS instead of 275PS with a maximum torque of 700 Nm. All this is sent to the rear wheels.

The petrol engines remain the same, this includes a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder engine developing 240PS / 340 Nm with power sent to the rear wheels. The 3.0-litre V6 petrol developing 340PS / 450 Nm is available either with RWD or AWD.

The top-of-the-line 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine is available in three states of tune - 470PS / 575Nm, 510PS / 625Nm and 550PS / 680Nm. This is only available with a rear-wheel drive drivetrain.

Jaguar is also highlighting the new electric power-assisted steering on the new XJ. Jaguar says that the system is responsive and provides as much feedback as any hydraulic steering unit. Though many may contest that claim, the EPAS system does enable Jaguar to add self-parking aids to the XJ and also improve overall vehicle efficiency.

Safety and assistance systems

The new XJ now gets the company's 'All-Surface Progress Control' technology, which is essentially an advanced traction control system. This allows for far better control on very slippery surfaces because the system monitors all wheels to prevent slips rather than trying to control the tyres after they have started to slip. The system uses the brakes and the accelerator to control the car rather than relying only on the brakes. Other new safety systems added to the XJ include traffic sign recognition assist, adaptive cruise control with queue assist (reduces fatigue and accidents in stop-go traffic), closing vehicle sensing (avoids crashing into speeding cars coming from behind), semi-autonomous parking assist, 360-degree camera view, reverse traffic detection, etc.
