2016 BMW 3-Series

“40 years ago, the BMW 3 Series established the modern sports sedan segment and is the world’s most widely sold premium vehicle. With its sporty character, the BMW 3 Series epitomises the heart of the BMW brand more than any other model. The new BMW 3 Series will continue to lead this legacy with its sporty design, powerful performance and unmatched efficiency. With its everyday usability, dynamic characteristics and attractive design, the new BMW 3 Series will establish a new benchmark in the Indian luxury car segment. The BMW 360º program further provides exceptional flexibility and affordability to our discerning customers,” said Mr. Philipp von Sahr, President, BMW Group India

In terms of exterior design, it is not very easy to make out the differences between the pre-facelift and facelifted models unless you look for the details.

2016 BMW 3-Series Left Side Profile

The new 3-Series is being offered in 4 variants/trim-lines in India, from base to top-of-the-line these include - Prestige, Sport Line, Luxury Line and M Sport. Each of these variants receive unique design details on the outside to set them apart.

The silhouette of the 3-Series remains the same - the long and low hood, the set-back cabin and the relatively small boot make the car look sleek while the wide stance adds sportiness. The changes made on the outside are as follows - full-LED headlights, LED front fog lamps, full-LED tail-lamps, broader side air-intakes on the front bumper and variant-specific trim on the rear bumper.

The Prestige variant does not get any detailing on the outside. The Sport Line variant features high-gloss black trim on the grille and the rear-bumper. The Luxury Line variant features the same trim but in high-gloss chrome. The M Sport variant gets the full M-Sport aero-kit on the outside - which includes new bumpers, skirts, and additional options to make the 3-Series look more sporty.

BMW is also offering unique looking keys with each of these variants - the Sport Line gets a key with black and red decorative-strip while the Luxury Line variant key gets a chrome-plated strip.

The new 3-Series is being offered with the following paint options - Black Sapphire, Platinum Silver, Jatoba, Imperial Blue, Brilliant Effect, Melbourne Red, Mediterranean Blue, Estoril Blue and non-metallic Alpine White.

2016 BMW 3-Series Interior Dashboard

The interior design of the new 3-Series is the same as the pre-facelift model, but it does get some new trim and accents to make it look fresher. New ambient lighting also adds to the occasion inside the car. The Sport Line variant gets black and red contrasts - this includes red rings around the gauges in the instrument console, red contrast stitching on the steering wheel and a gloss-black trim on the dash with red accent-strip. The 3-Series M Sport variant gets an M leather steering wheel, M front seats and full colour head-up display as standard. All variants are offered with additional trim and upholstery options.

The BMW 3-Series is only being offered in the 320d trim for now - petrol options will be launched later in 2016. The BMW 320d continues to be powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, twin-cylinder, diesel motor which has been retuned to develop a maximum power of 190PS (up by 6PS) at 4000rpm and 400Nm of peak torque (up by 20Nm) between 1750 - 2500rpm. THe 320d accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 7.2 seconds (faster by .4 seconds) and a top speed of 230 km/h (slower by 5 km/h).

This engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission - though the older model also had a similar transmission, BMW claims that this is a new transmission. BMW will now offer paddle-shifters on the Sport Line, Luxuy Line and M Sport variants. Power is sent to the rear wheels. The new 3-Series will also be equipped with the Driving Experience Control Switch which helps the driver toggle between four driving modes - Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport and Sport+ (only available on M Sport variant).
