Based on the group's MQB (Modular Transverse Architecture), the new gen model is made up of high strength, hot formed steel combined with aluminium in certain areas. As the result, the car is upto 85 kg lighter than its predecessor and around 20% more fuel efficient.

Despite being slightly smaller than the model it replaces, the car is claimed to offer more leg room, head room and boot space.

As we reported earlier, the highlight of the powertrain range will be a new 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel motor which produces 240 PS of power and an impressive torque of 500 Nm. The engine will come only with a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission and 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. A plug-in hybrid model with a claimed pure electric range of 31 miles (50 km) and overall range of 600 miles (960 km) will also be in the offing. The rest of the powertrain lineup is expected to be inherited from the outgoing model albeit with improvements.
