Volkswagen has revealed the new Passat GTE plug-in hybrid car prior to its global premier in the forthcoming 2014 Paris Motor Show. The new Passat GTE is based around the next generation (B8) Volkswagen Passat, which is also due for its launch in global markets early in 2015.

The Passat GTE will be Volkswagen’s fifth road-going electric vehicle after the the XL1, e-Up, e-Golf and the recently showcased Golf GTE. It will also become the first Volkswagen branded plug-in hybrid car that will be offered in both sedan and estate body-styles when it goes on sale.

With the eighth generation Passat, Volkswagen has infused a new lease of life to the outgoing model. Invariably, the electrified version will also receive all the bells and whistles of the updated model, however, the major highlight in the GTE version will still be the hybrid powertrain of the car.

The Passat GTE will be powered by Volkswagen’s famous 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine that develops 157PS of power@5,000rpm. The engine is clubbed with a three-phase permanent magnet synchronous electric motor in the gearbox housing that is capable of producing 116PS on its own. Both combined shoot the overall power output of the new Passat GTE to an impressive 271PS along with 400Nm of peak torque. Power will be sent to the front wheels only via a six-speed dual clutch transmission. With a claimed 0-100km/h sprint in 8.0 seconds, it cannot be termed as a slouch either. In hybrid mode, it will top out at 220km/h as well.

The efficiency figures are equally staggering as Volkswagen claims the Passat GTE to return a fuel economy of about 50km/l in European cycle. The car is also said to have a pure electric range of 50km. Volkswagen claims that with its 50-litre fuel tank brimmed and batteries fully charged up, the Passat GTE will have a driving range of 1000km.

Visually, there are a couple of cues that will help you differentiate the GTE from regular models. This will include blue highlights on the grille, a redesigned front bumper, differently stacked DRLs and new 17-inch alloy wheels. Similarly, there are new menu functions in the cabin that display information and updates on the plug-in system to the driver.

You can also start the car up, adjust air-conditioning functions and check vehicle information via a remote and an app. Volkswagen will also be offering an optional garage wall box along with the car that can charge the batteries at a power level of 3.6 kW, thereby, charging the battery pack fully in just 2.5 hours.

The Passat GTE will hit the European markets in the second half of 2015 in both wagon and sedan body-style. Meanwhile, it will be showcased for public display in the 2014 Paris Motor Show, starting this week.
