2015 Frankfurt Motor Show round-up: Top 10 India-bound Cars

The Frankfurt Motor Show is one of the most important car shows in the calendar as it plays host to a number of car launches (mostly important ones!) every year. This year’s edition of the German car show was no different. Let’s take a quick look at top 10 India-bound cars from the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show,

1. 2016 Audi S4

What's it? New Audi S4. Performance-oriented version of the otherwise sedate A4 sedan. Will be joined by the more frantic RS4 version only in 2017 though.
When’s it coming? Sometime in the second-half of 2016.
Expected price? Rs 55 lakh-Rs 65 lakh
Competition here, if any? Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG comes closest in terms of price and performance for now.
Highlights? Lighter, faster, more powerful, more economical and more environment-friendly. Ditches supercharger and DSG transmission for a twin-turbo petrol V6 and a new eight-speed tiptronic automatic, respectively.

2. Bentley Bentayga

What's it? First-ever luxury SUV by Bentley. Also “the fastest, most luxurious and most exclusive SUV in the world” says Bentley.
When's it coming? Most likely in 2017
Expected price? Approximately Rs 4 crore!
Competition here, if any? Range Rover LWB
Highlights? All-new twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre W12 engine developing 608PS/900Nm. Coupled with that is an eight-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to all four wheels using a ‘sophisticated’ all-wheel drive system. As a consequence, the elephantine Bentayga will dismiss 0-100km/h in 4.1 seconds and top out at 301km/h! All that in a cossetting, hushed and typical Bentley demeanour.

3. 2016 BMW 7-Series

What's it? BMW’s new flagship sedan, the seventh-gen 7-Series.
When's it coming? Early in 2016
Expected price? Rs 90 lakh to Rs 1.6 crore
Competition here, if any? Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8 L and Jaguar XJ.
Highlights? A raft of new-age technologies and features including BMW Laserlights, Remote Control Parking, iDrive with gesture control etc. Incorporates lightweight CFRF (carbon fibre reinforced plastic) in construction making it 130kg lighter than its predecessor. New and improved powertrains including the all-new plug-in 740e hybrid.

4. Hyundai Santa Fe facelift

What's it? 2016 Hyundai Sante Fe
When's it coming? Sometime in 2016
Expected price? Rs 25 lakh to Rs 30 lakh
Competition? Honda CR-V, SsangYong Rexton etc.
Highlights? Refined looks- both exterior and interior have been revamped; enhanced safety features, more spacious rear bench space and uprated powertrains.

5. Jaguar F-Pace

What's it? Jaguar’s first-ever crossover, the F-Pace. Clubs the utility of a luxury crossover with the performance and handling of a sportscar. Hence, the title ‘Performance Crossover’.
When's it coming? Should be here by end 2016
Expected price? Rs 70 lakh to Rs 90 lakh
Competition here, if any? Audi Q5, Porsche Macan etc.
Highlights? Impressive looks, opulent and feature-rich cabin, lightweight aluminium construction, decent off-road equipment on offer and a wide-range of engines to choose from - 2.0-litre ‘Ingenium’ diesel, 2.0-liter petrol, 3.0-litre diesel V6 and a high-performance F-Type derived 3.0-litre supercharged V6!

6. 2016 Jaguar XF

What's it? Second-gen Jaguar XF
When's it coming? Sometime in 2016
Expected price? Rs 50 lakh- Rs 70 lakh
Competition here, if any? Many, actually. Audi A6, BMW 5-Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class etc.
Highlights? 380PS supercharged V6 petrol and AWD now available! Aluminium-intensive architecture makes the new XF lighter (weight savings of almost 190 kilograms have been achieved!), more economical and more agile than ever. It’s also longer and more spacious than the outgoing model. New infotainment system and modern equipment complete the updates. The hydraulic steering of the old car has been replaced with an electric unit, although Jaguar claims it’s as communicative and involving as before.

7. 2016 Porsche 911 Carrera

What's it? Next-gen Porsche 911, now comes fitted with turbocharger at entry-level!
When's it coming? Later in 2016 or early 2017
Expected price? Rs 90 lakh- Rs 1.5 crore
Competition here, if any? Audi R8, Jaguar F-Type and the forthcoming Mercedes-AMG GT.
Highlights? Powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-litre flat-six petrol engine. Faster and more powerful than the naturally aspirated motors of the outgoing models but, also more economical. Among other updates, the exterior and interior have been ‘refined’ with subtle details while there’s also a new ‘Sport Response’ button, maximizing acceleration during launch.

8. Suzuki Baleno

What's it? Suzuki resurrects the Baleno nameplate, albeit in an all-new premium hatchback.
When's it coming? October 2015
Expected price? Rs 6 lakh- Rs 8 lakh
Competition here, if any? Honda Jazz, Hyundai Elite i20, Volkswagen Polo etc.
Highlights? New platform, Maruti Suzuki’s first real premium offering in the small car segment, 1.0 boosterjet engine (not confirmed for India though), well-equipped and spacious. To be offered with the 1.3-diesel featuring SHVS mild-hybrid tech along with the 1.2-litre petrol and an optional CVT gearbox in the Indian market.

9. 2016 Toyota Prius

What's it? Fourth-generation of the ‘the planet’s favourite hybrid’- the Prius.
When's it coming? 2017
Expected price? Rs 45 lakh
Competition here, if any? None as of now.
Highlights? Controversial styling, new interior and an all-new platform. Lighter and more efficient hybrid drivetrain in the new model means the Prius is more environment friendly than ever! Toyota also claims it is ‘more fun to drive’ than before.

10. 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan

What's it? 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan
When's it coming? 2017
Expected price? Rs 25 lakh- Rs 30 lakh
Competition here, if any? Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa-Fe, SsangYong Rexton etc..
Highlights? Based around Volkswagen’s new MQB platform, 7-seater
(LWB variant), upto 8 engines on offer in international markets (including a plug-in hybrid), brimmed with safety systems and new-age car tech.
