Volkswagen has launched the facelifted Jetta in the Indian market today. Prices for the petrol versions start at Rs 13.87 lakh while the diesel range starts at Rs 15.08 lakh , all prices being ex-showroom Mumbai.

This new launch is the second facelift update of the all-new model that was launched in August 2011. While the car remains unchanged mechanically, there have been several minor updates to both the exteriors and the interiors. Version wise pricing (ex-showroom Mumbai) is as follows:

Volkswagen Jetta:

1.4-litre TSI - 13.87 lakh to 15.35 lakh

2.0-litre TDI: 15.08 lakh to 19.77 lakh

On the outside, the new version comes with revised styling for the grille, bumper, air-dam and the fog lamps. The top end Highline version (only sold with the diesel motor) gets LED daytime running lights and slightly different headlamps. The bonnet of the car has been tweaked slightly as well.

At the back, you get a new boot lid that comes with an integrated spoiler, new tail lamps, revised bumper and new reflectors. However, the changes are subtle and it will be hard for new owners to figure out the changes.
The Jetta also gets gorgeous alloy wheels for the diesel version while the petrol one comes with sober looking ones – the reason for this is that the petrol engine is only available in TrendLine and ComfortLine trim levels.

On the inside, you get a new airbag deactivation switch, a new twin-tube instrumentation cluster and a flat bottom steering that is also seen on the new Polo and the new Vento. Passenger space remains excellent and cabin quality is up there with the best. Standard features on the Highline version include a touchscreen infotainment system, dual zone climate control, 6 airbags, ESP, fatigue detection system etc. The new Jetta misses out on an optional sunroof and a rear camera – the latter is pretty surprising given the segment and the pricing of the car.

Engine options on the new Jetta remain the same which includes a 1.4-litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine that puts out 122PS of power and 200Nm of torque that is available from as low as 1500rpm. This engine comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and the automatic transmission seems to be missing with the petrol engine. This engine is pretty free-revving and though it won’t be burning rubber often, it does the job pretty well. We however would have loved to see the bigger 1.8-litre petrol mill that does duty on the Octavia.

The diesel engine comes in the form of the same 2.0-litre unit that puts out 140PS of power and 320Nm of torque. This engine comes with two gearbox options that include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed DSG automatic transmission.

The petrol 1.4 TSI engine returns ARAI certified 14.69 km/l while the 2.0 TDI diesel engine returns 19.33 km/l with manual transmission and 16.96 km/l with the automatic transmission.
The Jetta is the third largest selling sedan in the D segment and does about 150-200 units per month. This new launch is purely a mild facelift and while it will result into higher foot-falls in the showrooms, it might not translate into a big jump in monthly sales for the company.
