With the launch of the i20 Active, Hyundai has entered yet another segment in the Indian car market. The i20 Active is based on the Elite i20 hatchback and as is the case with other ‘cross’ hatchbacks, a lot has been changed in the Active as well. Prices for the petrol versions start at Rs. 6.38 lakh while the diesel range is priced from Rs. 7.63 lakh onwards, all prices being ex-showroom Delhi.

The Hyundai i20 Active will be sold with the same engine options as the Elite i20 which means you get a refined 1.2-litre petrol with a 5-speed manual gearbox and a punchy 1.4-litre diesel with a 6-speed manual transmission. Power and torque figures remain unchanged but Hyundai has worked around with the gear ratios to make the engine respond better to throttle inputs. As a result, the i20 Active is a lot better to drive in city conditions while still retaining its fuel efficient nature. This combined with a slick gearbox makes the i20 a breeze in most driving situations.

Up front the new i20 Active gets a major change which includes projector headlamps with daytime running lights, new bumper which seems to be an inverted replica of the Elite i20’s, revised fog lamps, skid plate and the works. The lower black part of the front bumper gets further company in the form of lower black cladding on the side of the car and at the back as well. Side profile of the i20 Active also looks different thanks to new 16-inch alloy wheels, silver roof rails and that (expected) black cladding. The rear of the i20 Active is rather interesting and a bag of mixed beans. While the silver skid plate looks nice, the redesigned bumper with circular insertions looks a little odd. The right does the job of being a reverse light but the left one has been left as it is. Overall though, the i20 Active is surely one of the better looking hatchbacks in India. What helps further is the ‘tall’ stance which is a result of a higher ground clearance.

On the inside, the overall cabin design remains unchanged though Hyundai will be offering the car in two different colour options – black/blue and black/orange. The former is available on the silver exterior color option. The latter has more of black on the inside and is the one that looks better of the two. Apart the colour change, everything else remains same as the Elite i20 and this indeed is a good thing as the i20 was always known for high quality interiors with great designing. The interiors are also very practical and this is one car that has impressed us time and again when it comes to the feature list. If we may crib, the only thing missing is a comprehensive driver information display unit.
