Fiat Avventura launched at Rs. 5.99 lakh

Fiat India has launched a more 'macho' variant of the Punto Evo, christened the Fiat Avventura. The Fiat Avventura has been pitted against the likes of the Volkswagen Cross Polo and Toyota Etios Cross for now, while future competition could include the faux-crossover based on the Hyundai Elite i20. While the Cross Polo and Etios Cross are little more than dressed-up variants of the hatchbacks they are based on, the Avventura is noticeably different than the Punto Evo. The fact that Fiat has made the Avventura in a host of variants with a wide price range is definitely going to add to the vehicle's appeal to a wide set of customers.

In terms of style, the Avventura stands out from the Punto Evo thanks to the added body-cladding all around for that rugged look, functional roof-rails, a prominent raised ride-height, unique 16-inch wheels and the rear-bumper mounted spare wheel. The spare wheel opens independently of the hatch-door and adds a layer of complexity to accessing the luggage compartment, but the style factor that it adds will make this a minor inconvenience for most people. The bumper design at the front and rear include skid-plates which give the Avventura a tough look.  Rest of the design elements on the outside are similar to the Punto Evo though. What is refreshing is the fact that the design of Avventura feels natural, and that sets it apart from the competition.

Move inside and the cabin of the Avventura feels similar (if you have been inside the Punto Evo or the Linea) and different at the same time. The overall design of the cabin, including the seats, door pads and dashboard are the same; the addition of extra equipment like a compass and clinometers above the centre console, new leatherette-fabric seats and leatherette inserts on the door-pads make the Avventura feel very different. The colour combination of the seats, white-and-blue striped fabric surrounded by brown leatherette is refreshing, and so is the grey-and-brown combination on the door-pads. The dashboard gets the same trim as the Punto Evo. The Avventura also gets a two-stage driver airbag.

Fiat has decided to offer the Avventura with the more powerful variants of diesel and petrol engines in the Punto range. This means that the petrol variants of the Avventura are powered by the 1.4-litre FIRE engine developing 90PS @ 6,000 RPM and 115Nm @ 4,500 RPM, while the diesel variants are powered by the 1.3-litre MultiJet engine developing 93PS @ 4,000 RPM and 209Nm @ 2,000 RPM. Efficiency figures for the petrol and diesel engines as per ARAI are 14.4 km/l and 20.5 km/l respectively.

Fiat has raised the ride-height of the Avventura by 10mm to 205mm and has had to stiffen the suspension to keep the vehicle’s sweet handling characteristics intact. The increased ride-height has led Fiat to re-tune the spring rates to contain body roll during hard-cornering. As all variants will be offered with 16-inch alloys shod with 205mm-section tyres, mechanical grip will be on the higher side too. The car has been made available in a choice of six shades. Quirks like the weird pedal-positions remain, which can be a bit of a hassle to those who are new to the Punto/Avventura, but it is not difficult to get used to. Drivers will also have to get used to the spare wheel sticking out at the back, although it does allow for more boot space.

The Avventura's nicely executed styling, increased ride height, added equipment lend a very unique appeal to the vehicle. And this in itself should help Fiat better it's competition in the segment. Fiat claims that customer interest in the Avventura has been rising since it's showcase at the 2014 Auto Expo, with the company having received 15,000 inquiries already. We will now have to gauge how this translates onto the sales charts.
