It is the number one manufacturer in some segments and makes value for money and affordable cars. Today we look at the Toyota’s offering in the D-segment sedan; Toyota Corolla Altis and see how it fares against its rising competition from Skoda. Skoda manufacturers solid built and premium cars and brings the newest Skoda Laura to the table for this comparison. Looks and design:


Toyota Corolla Altis brings a fresh new design into the segment and comes loaded with features as well. It features a sporty looking front end with its well designed front headlamps featuring HID lamps and rear view mirror integrated indicators. It also sports the mesh grill unique to the diesel variant and a huge Toyota logo above it. Corolla Altis has body colored bumpers and well designed tail lamps. The 7 spoke alloy wheels look sporty. The Corolla Altis has a sense of elegance and charm in its design. It has a very pleasing personality. It has been well built by Toyota and the fit and finish quality is excellent and paint job is top notch.


Skoda Laura is a beautifully designed car with its sweptback headlights over the long hood and honeycomb grill up front along with the well design fog lamps and day time running lamps. It has a rear spoiler which increases sportiness of this car and adds character to the already muscular feel of it. Skoda Laura brings multi spoke alloy wheels which look fantastic and brings wide tyres which are grippy. It has body colored bumpers and is available in four different colors. The overall character of the car seems very sporty and aggressive. It has been well constructed and the fit and finish is excellent.

Interiors – design, space and features:


Toyota is known for building durable cars which are comfortable to drive. Toyota Corolla Altis carries that forward with spacious and airy interiors which provide ample leg and head room for taller passengers. It the choices of car if you prefer to be chauffeur driven. It has a steering wheel with audio and MID controls and features faux wood accents. The instrument cluster features the speedo, tacho, fuel gauge, and other details. Toyota Corolla Altis has spot on ergonomics with easy to reach controls and very good driving position. It has comfortable seats which give excellent support to the back and thighs. It has a 6 CD changer with only AUX support. It has a good number of storage areas while the boot itself packs a total luggage space of 475 litres of boot space.


Skoda Laura has good combination of interior space and features. It has a mix of black, grey and silver materials chosen for its interior colors. Skoda Laura has comfortable seats which offer excellent back support and has adjustable lumbar support. The interiors quality is solid like every Skoda in the market and the plastic quality feels premium. The air conditioner is fantastic and interiors have features such as auto-dimming lights. There is ample leg and head room inside the car. There are 4 air bags; dual side and dual front air bags. It brings 6 CD changer and 8 speakers and the stock speakers sound fantastic. It has plenty of cubby holes and a large glove box and the boot space is 560 litres, plenty enough to carry your entire travel luggage.

Toyota Corolla Altis has a very smooth and refined engine options. It brings an efficient and smooth diesel engine and a powerful and fun to drive engine in the petrol variant. The diesel variant of the Toyota Corolla Altis is a 1.4 litre diesel engine which churns out 86 BHP of power and a maximum torque of 205 NM and comes with the 6 speed manual transmission. ARAI has rated the diesel engine variant of Toyota Corolla Altis to deliver a maximum fuel efficiency of 21.45 kmpl. The powerful petrol engine option in the Corolla Altis is a 1794cc 4 cylinder unit with a 16 valve DOHC engine and produces a maximum power of 137 BHP at 6400 RPM and 173 NM of torque. The gearbox in the petrol variant has 6 speed manual and 7 speed automatic transmission options as well. ARAI has rated Corolla Altis petrol variant to deliver a maximum fuel efficiency of 15.22 kmpl


Skoda Laura has two engine options. The petrol variant has a 1.8 litre turbocharged direct injection petrol engine which produces 160 BHP at 4500-6200 RPM and a massive 250 NM of maximum torque from 1500 to 4500 RPM. It has manual and automatic transmission options. While the diesel variant has 1968cc motor with minimal turbo lag and produces a maximum power of 140 bhp at 4000 RPM and maximum torque of 320 NM between 1750 to 2500 RPM. The petrol variant is rated by ARAI to deliver a maximum fuel efficiency of 13.8 kmpl while the diesel variant has been rated to deliver a maximum fuel efficiency of 20 kmpl by ARAI. Both the engines are excellent performers and are very tractable motors.

Suspension – Ride, comfort and handling:


Toyota Corolla Altis is a perfect car for city runs, it is comfortable and provides a plush ride which is on the softer side but not bouncy and lets you enjoy your highway runs. It has a raised suspension on the Indian models which does a great job in keeping you off from scraping on any speed brakers and going over craters and pot holes. It has a refined suspension however it is setup keeping in mind only one thing: comfort. Toyota Corolla Altis is not built for spirited driving around corners and has a light EPS steering unit which gives little feedback at low speeds and manages to weigh in decently at high speeds. The braking is sufficient and you get ABS + EBD to ensure further safety while braking.


Skoda Laura has very good handling and ride dynamics. It has a well setup up suspension which absorbs all the bumps and potholes, craters and undulations which the road can throw at it. It’s not too bouncy and ensures that the passengers are always comfortable inside the car. It has stability control electronics which ensure that the tyres have maximum road holding capability at all times. The chassis is very good and capable of letting you drive in a spirited manner. The brakes are excellent as well and the Skoda Laura brings you ABS + EBD which further enhance its braking capabilities.

Toyota Corolla Altis is priced from ex-showroom Delhi price of 11.07 lakhs for the Toyota Corolla ALtis 1.8J petrol variant. The Toyota Corolla Altis G petrol variant is priced at 13.01 lakhs and the automatic variant Toyota Corolla Atis G HV AT is priced at 14.25 lakhs. Toyota Corolla Altis GL is priced at 14.40 lakhs and the top variant in petrol, the Toyota Corolla Altis VL is priced at 15.50 lakhs. The Diesel variants are priced from 12.07 lakhs for the Toyota Corolla Altis Diesel D4DJ, the middle variant diesel is priced at 4.03 lakhs for Toyota Corolla Altis Diesel D4DG while the top variant diesel is priced at 15.29 lakhs for Toyota Corolla Altis Diesel D4DGL. The pricing makes perfect sense for the Corolla Altis.

Skoda Laura is available in multiple variants and engine options and is priced at an ex-showroom Price of 12.44 lakhs for Skoda Laura Petrol 1.8 TSI Active, Skoda Laura 1.8 TSI Ambiente Petrol is priced at 14.48 lakhs. Skoda Laura vRS Petrol top end petrol variant is priced at 16.11 lakhs. Skoda Laura Ambiente 2.0 TDI CR MT diesel is priced at 14.48 lakhs. Skoda Laura Ambiente 2.0 TDI CR AT diesel is priced at 15.65 lakhs. Skoda Laura Elegance 2.0 TDI CR MT is priced at 16.05 lakhs. Skoda Laura Elegance 2.0 TDI CR AT is priced at 17.10 lakhs. Top diesel variant Skoda Laura L&K 2.0 TDI CR AT is priced at 18.97 lakhs. Skoda needs to improve its after sales otherwise it has an excellent product in hand with the Laura.

Toyota Corolla Altis brings Japanese precision engineering and is one of the most comfortable cars in the market today. It’s been a best seller for Toyota and one of the largest selling cars in the world today. It brings excellent features and overall a very good car. Skoda Laura is another great entrant in the C+ segment today and a great car to drive. It has excellent built quality and feels luxurious given its solid interiors and fit and finish. However Skoda needs to work on it’s after sales and service and listen to its customers.
