Skoda Fabia versus Renault Pulse

Skoda Fabia is one of the best cars from the premium hatchback segment in India and brings a host of features in the segment. It has been around and has sold reasonable well for Skoda in the market. Renault recently launched their Pulse hatchback which is also positioned as a premium hatchback in the market. Let’s compare these two cars and find out which is the better deal.


Looks and design:

Skoda Fabia brings very good looks to the premium hatchback segment and definitely looks like a luxury hatchback that it positioned in the segment to be. It has classy big clear lens headlamps and integrated fog lamps in the bumper. The chrome tipped front grille adds sportiness to the car. It has a well designed rear and looks fantastic. The build quality is simply top notch and the paint quality is fantastic.

Renault Pulse bears some resemblance to the Nissan Micra whose platform this car is based upon. From the side profile it looks very similar however the front end has been completely redesigned and looks much sportier. The rear has also been redesigned and looks in proportion with the front end of the car. It has been well built and quality meets the standard for a premium hatchback.

Interiors – design, space and features:

Skoda Fabia has excellent list of features such as climate control, powerful air con, CD/MP3 stereo music system and airbags for safety. It has high quality interiors and comfortable seats which provide excellent support to the body. The dual tone dashboard is elegant yet very functional and the instrument console has MID. Skoda Fabia comes with cubby holes and small storage areas inside while the boot itself can hold 480 liters of luggage.

Renault Pulse comes with two different trim options for its interiors which vary between base model and top model of the Pulse. It has comfortable interiors which feel spacious with ample leg and headroom and comes with a functional dashboard with good list of features. It brings MP3 music system, effective air con and adjustable driver seat amongst others. It has 251 liters of boot space which is sufficient for small luggage.

Engine – performance, power, torque, fuel economy, smoothness:

Skoda Fabia comes with a 1.2 liter petrol engine which produces 75 BHP at 5400 RPM and 110 NM of torque at 3750 RPM and has been rated by ARAI to deliver 16.4 kmpl. The 1.6 liter petrol engine is a an excellent performer with 105 BHP at 5550 RPM and 153 NM of torque at 3800 RPM and has been rated by ARAI to deliver 14.83 kmpl. The diesel Skoda Fabia has a 1.2 liter 3 cylinder engine which produced 75 BHP at 4200 RPM and 180 NM of torque at 2000 RPM and delivers a fuel efficiency of 20.9 kmpl as rated by ARAI.

Renault brings a powerful 1.2 liter, 3 cylinder petrol engine which produces 79 BHP of power at 6000 RPM and 104 NM of torque at 4000 RPM. ARAI has tested and certified this variant to deliver maximum fuel efficiency of 18.06 kmpl. The diesel 1.5 liter K9K engine makes 64 BHP at 4000 RPM and 160 NM of torque at 2000 RPM and has been rated by ARAI to deliver a maximum fuel efficiency of 23.08 kmpl. Both the engines offer very good drivability and good fuel efficiency.

Suspension – Ride, comfort and handling:

Skoda Fabia brings very good ride quality owing to a comfortable yet firm suspension setup. It remains excellent to drive around curves as it is very well composed and body roll is well controlled. The steering gives excellent feedback and the entire handling package makes it a fun car to drive on twisty roads. It comes with ABS + EBD which further enhance the braking package on this hot hatchback.

Renault Pulse has a well setup suspension which ensures a very good ride quality. It isn’t built to be an agile handling machine like its rival here but it turns well and the body roll is well controlled. The steering gives good feedback and remains light weighted. Renault have however missed on ABS which is an important feature in premium hatchbacks today.

Skoda Fabia is priced from (ex-showroom Delhi) 4.63 lakhs for Fabia 1.2 MPI Active Plus, 4.85 lakhs for Fabia 1.2 Ambiente Petrol, 5.85 lakhs for the Skoda Fabia 1.2 MPI Elegance and the 1.6 liter engine variant Skoda Fabia 1.6 MPI Elegance is priced at 6.17 lakhs and is only available in one trim level option. Skoda Fabia Diesel is priced from 6.45 lakhs for Skoda Fabia 1.2 TDI Ambition Plus, 7.25 lakhs for Skoda Fabia 1.2 Diesel Elegance and top diesel variant is priced at 8.10 lakhs for Skoda Fabia 1.2 Scout. The pricing is very good for a quality German hot hatch.


Renault Pulse is available from (ex-showroom Delhi) price of 4.27 lakhs for Renault Pulse RXE Petrol, 5.06 lakhs for Renault Pulse RXL Petrol and top variant in petrol is priced at 5.65 lakhs for Renault Pulse RXZ Petrol. The diesel engine variant starts from 6.06 lakhs for Renault Pulse Diesel RXE, Renault Pulse Diesel RXL is priced at 6.19 and top variant Renault Pulse Diesel RXZ is priced at 6.60 lakhs. Renault Pulse brings several excellent features but is similar to the Micra and feels pricey all things considered.

Verdict:


Skoda Fabia is a fantastic car and has many satisfied customers as far as the product is concerned. Skoda isn’t particularly known for their excellent service which can still be improved. They have excellent products which are good value for money. Renault is new in the car market in India and the Pulse is a good car however for the price they command it misses a few key features. It could’ve been more competitively priced as it is not a very luxurious hatchback despite being positioned as a premium hatchback.
