Maruti Swift DZire has been a successful product for Maruti Udyog Limited. Maruti DZire is an entry level sedan from Maruti and offers good features and performance and it has recently been given a facelift. Maruti has an excellent portfolio of passenger cars is the largest car manufacturer in the country and the leading in many segments. The new Swift DZire improves upon the outgoing model in quite a few places and we shall compare it with the older model and tell you the difference.


Looks and design:



Maruti Swift DZire has styling inspired by the Swift but has a boot attached to it. When seen from upfront the DZire looks like the hatchback Swift. The design however is proportionate front to back and has been overall well designed. It looks elegant and slightly aggressive when looked at from different angles. The larger rear quarter glass adds to the styling. It has stylish side profile which doesn’t go unnoticed. The styling is contemporary which has been further improved in the newer iteration. It had been built well by Maruti and the fit, finish and paint quality was good.



Maruti Swift DZire has been visually improved in its latest avatar. The new facelifted Maruti Swift DZire brings hawk eye inspired headlamps and slightly curved front grill in black with a big Suzuki logo. The entire front and rear design has been redone slightly and the car sports a European look. It looks fantastic and fresh in its new avatar in comparison however the overall size and exterior features remain similar to the outgoing variant. The build quality is very good and fit, finish and paint quality is excellent on the new Maruti Swift DZire.

Interiors – design, space and features:



The old Maruti Swift DZire had good interiors with comfortable seats. They offered very good support to the back and the cabin area felt spacious with plenty of leg room for the passengers. It could easily seat 5 people in the car. An integrated single din stereo music system with CD player, MP3, WMA and FM radio support was present for your in-car entertainment. The instrument console white-lit speedometer and tachometers looked great at night in the old Maruti Swift DZire. This sedan’s upholstery matches the interiors of the car giving it a very elegant feel to it. The fit and finish of the interiors was of acceptable quality. It also had other features such as the rear defogger, adjustable shoulder anchor, power-steering and power windows and an excellent 464 liter of boot space.



The new Maruti Swift DZire offers spacious cabin and comfortable seats. There is plenty of legroom for the passengers and the rear leg room is increased slightly compared to the older model. The seats offer excellent support to the back and thighs. The ergonomics in the newer variant are very good and so is the interior plastic quality. This new iteration of the Swift DZire now brings dual tone dashboard and beige seat covers and door pads which add the elegance of the interiors. New Maruti Swift DZire brings automatic climate control, integrated stereo and many of the features from the older model are present. Compared to the older model the new Swift DZire has only 316 liters of boot space for your luggage.

Engine – performance, power, torque, fuel economy, smoothness:



The outgoing model of Maruti Swift DZire was a good performer with the K-series engine and was available in two engine variants. The petrol variant came with a 1.2 liter; 1197cc petrol engine mated to a 5 speed manual gear box developed 85 BHP at 6000 RPM and 113 NM of torque at 4500 RPM. It was smooth and vibe free and offered good performance in city and on the highway. The petrol variant gave a best fuel economy of 17.94 kmpl as certified by ARAI. The diesel variant of the Maruti Swift DZire came with a 1.3 liter 1248 DDiS engine which is particularly known for its performance owing to its advanced technology producing 75 BHP at 4000 RPM and 190 NM of torque at 2000 RPM. The diesel Swift DZire returns an ARAI certified 21.7 kmpl. This engine variant had excellent drivability and bottom end performance.



The newer Maruti Swift DZire carries forth the same engine from the previous model. The petrol variant comes with the 1.2 liter; 1197cc petrol engine and makes 85 BHP at 6000 RPM and 113 NM of torque at 4500 RPM and is mated to a 5 speed gear box. This engine variant delivers 19.1 kmpl as per ARAI certification. It is also now available with Automatic Transmission in the newer Swift DZIre. The petrol engine variant with automatic transmission has been certified by ARAI to deliver 17. 4 kmpl. The diesel variant of the Maruti Swift DZire brings the popular 1.3 liter 1248cc DDiS engine which makes 75 BHP at 4000 RPM and 190 NM of torque at 2000 RPM. The diesel Swift DZire returns an ARAI certified 23.4 kmpl. The petrol engine offers very good drivability and is very tractable. The light clutch helps you comfortably drive through slow moving traffic and the new automatic transmission offers an excellent drive under city traffic conditions. The diesel variant offers a very good bottom end performance and the highway cruising capabilities of both the engine variants is very good.

Suspension – Ride, comfort and handling:



The old Maruti Swift DZire offered a comfortable drive with a high level of comfort with a good ride quality. It had a slightly firm ride but remains well cushioned owing to its well tweaked suspension setup. The stability level at high speeds was good and at lower speeds maneuvering through bad and bumpy roads it was well equipped to handle the road conditions. It had a good steering which gave satisfactory feedback and responded positively at speed. The heavier diesel engine did not impact the handling characteristics of the old DZire. The brakes were good and ABS + EBD was there to help slow you down quite quickly.



The new Maruti Swift DZire carries forth the good handling characteristics of the older Swift DZire. It has good road manners and maintains a good ride quality. It absorbs all the bumps and undulations on the road and offers a comfortable driving experience. It has a well tweaked suspension which lets you glide over bad roads without throwing all the passengers inside. It has a well weighted steering which allows you confidently maintain control over the car under varying road conditions. It has good brakes which help you slow down and also includes ABS + EBD.

Value for money – sticker price, standard features:


Maruti did well with the first iteration of the DZire and gave it a good list of features to look forward to. Maruti had priced the Swift DZire petrol variant at price (ex-showroom Delhi) starting from 4.95 lakhs for the entry level Swift DZire LXI, the middle variant VXI Swift DZire was priced at a good price of 5.47 lakhs and 6.39 lakhs for the top variant Swift DZire ZXI. The diesel Swift DZire began with the price of 5.85 lakhs for the base LDI variant. The middle variant VDI was priced at 6.36 lakhs and the top-end diesel DZire had been priced at 7.19 lakhs. The fuel economy combined with the pricing and overall features and level of trim made the old Swift DZire a good value for money offering from Maruti.


Maruti has done well with the pricing of the new Maruti Swift DZire. It has certainly improved the new iteration over the older one. It has been priced reasonably and starts from an ex-showroom Delhi price of 4.88 lakhs for the base model Maruti Swift DZire LXI Petrol, top petrol variant Maruti Swift DZire ZXI with manual transmission costs 6.30 lakhs while the automatic transmission petrol engine variant is priced at 6.66 lakhs for Maruti Swift DZire VXI AT. The base diesel engine variant is priced at 5.99 lakhs for the Maruti Swift DZire LDI. The top variant in diesel is priced at 7.34 lakhs for Maruti Swift DZire ZDI. Despite the enhancement in design and features the pricing is close to its previous pricing which makes it very good value for money.

Verdict:


Maruti has been a segment leader in low cost small car market and has found success in the past with its other entry level sedans. Maruti DZire has taken it forward for Maruti once again with good sales. It brings more features to the segment and improves on its design elements as well. Maruti has priced it well and their wide service network and excellent after sales is second to none in the country and that is a huge plus point. So if you were looking for an affordable sedan which comes loaded with features, good interiors and styling all of it at attractive pricing and low cost of ownership then certainly the DZire will fit you well indeed.
