Nissan Micra versus Maruti Ritz

Nissan Micra is a popular hatchback from Nissan in the hatchback segment and has been a successful launch for Nissan in India with growing sales over the past year and half. We compare it to the Maruti Ritz which is a popular hatchback in the market and has been a stellar success for Maruti. Let’s find out which of the two offers value for money and what features they bring to the market.

Looks and design:


Nissan Micra is a beautifully designed car and brings a well designed front end with its bug eyed headlights and twin grille and European looks. It has a retro look to its side and rear profile but fits well in segment. It sports an elegant look but at the same time looks sporty enough to attract younger drivers. It looks bigger in person than in the pictures. The hatch from Nissan is put together very well and the build quality and finish is good.


Maruti Ritz is a tall-boy hatchback built on the Swift platform. It has a mature looking front end which has been updated for the diesel variant recently and looks more aggressive than before. It has an eye catchy road presence and is well thought out and designed overall. The diesel variant now sports stylish new headlamp, sporty rear spoiler. Maruti has done a good job with the build quality of the Ritz and it also retains good exterior fit and finish.

Interiors – design, space and features:


Nissan Micra brings good interior features with comfortable seats and plenty of leg room for its passengers. It sports grey dashboard with silver lined center console and brings dual airbags inside, climate controls, keyless entry, power windows, MID amongst a host of other features. It has plenty of cubby holes and other storage areas and comes with a decent boot space of 226 liters for your small travel luggage.


Maruti Ritz top variant in petrol gets blue dual tone interiors while the top variant in diesel now gets red dual tone interiors after the facelift. Both variants have very comfortable seats and the front seats offer excellent support. The ergonomics inside are spot on with easy to reach controls. Maruti Ritz has good air conditioning and comes with CD/MP3 stereo music system. It also packs a decent boot space of 236 liters for your luggage.

Engine – performance, power, torque, fuel economy, smoothness:


Nissan Micra brings a powerful 1.2 liter, 3 cylinder petrol engine which produces a maximum power of 75 BHP at 6000 RPM and maximum torque of 104 NM at 4000 RPM. The petrol variant has been rated by ARAI to deliver a maximum fuel efficiency of 18.06 kmpl. The diesel engine variant comes with a 1.5 liter, 4 cylinder that produces 64 BHP at 4000 RPM and maximum torque of 160 NM at 2000 RPM. The diesel variant has been rated by ARAI to deliver 23.08 kmpl. Both the engines are mated to a 5 speed gearbox and provide excellent in-city drivability.


Maruti Ritz in its Petrol variant brings a class leading 1.2 L K-series DOHC engine developing 84 BHP at 6000 RPM and 113 NM of torque! Maruti Ritz petrol variant has been certified by ARAI to deliver a fuel efficiency of 17.7 kmpl. The diesel variant of Maruti Ritz sports the 1.3 liter DDiS engine delivering 75 BHP at 4000 RPM and 190 NM of torque at 2000 RPM and now delivers a fuel efficiency of 23.2 kmpl as certified by ARAI. There is also an automatic transmission variant soon to be made launched in Petrol.

Suspension – Ride, comfort and handling:


Nissan Micra offers a comfortable driving experience. It has been tuned for comfort and the suspension gives a cushy ride as you go over the bumps and undulations without discomforting the passengers. The steering is very light and easy to use in the city and the car has good highway stability. The brakes are powerful enough to slow down from higher speeds and it comes with ABS in select models.


Maruti Ritz offers a well tuned suspension and has a good ride quality but can be a little firm sometimes owing to its design. It goes over potholes and absorbs bumps effortlessly. The body roll is well controlled and it has excellent brakes which provides good feedback and comes with ABS on the higher variants to help slow you down from speed.

Nissan Micra is available from ex-showroom Delhi price of 4.49 lakhs for Nissan Micra XE Plus Petrol, Nissan Micra XL Petrol is priced at 4.84 lakhs. Top variant petrol is priced at 5.51 lakhs for the Nissan Micro XV Petrol. The diesel variant starts at 5.96 lakhs for Nissan Micra Diesel XV and 6.41 lakhs for Nissan Micra Diesel XV Premium. The pricing makes it a good value for money product from the stable of Nissan.

Maruti Ritz has been priced (ex-showroom Delhi) ranging from 4.16 lakhs for the Ritz petrol LXI going up to the top variant petrol Ritz ZXI at 5.16 lakhs. The diesel variant of Maruti Ritz is priced (ex-showroom Delhi) starting from 5.31 lakhs for the base model diesel Ritz LDI and 5.64 lakhs for the Ritz diesel VDI. The new top variant in diesel is the Maruti Ritz ZDI which has been priced at 6.23 lakhs. The automatic variant in petrol has been priced at 5.70 lakhs for the Maruti Ritz AT.

Nissan Micra is having a good run in the market and has been well accepted. Nissan needs to improve on its sales and service network but otherwise it is doing quite well. Maruti is a well known and respected brand in the country and comes with the largest dealer and service network as well. It is a household name across the nation. Both are fantastic cars and the choice can be a tough one.
