New Hyundai i20 versus New Maruti Swift

Hyundai launched their latest iteration of the i20 hatchback. It brings plenty of new features to the market and also looks fantastic in its latest avatar. Hyundai has been steadily climbing the sales chart and the new i20 will certainly help its progress. Maruti Suzuki launched their new Swift few months ago and it has been a strong seller for the company ever since. Looks and design:

Hyundai has given its i20 an excellent facelift and brings their trademark fluidic design to their latest iterant of the popular hatchback. It has sharp look exteriors with an aggressively styled front end with large headlamps and chromed grill. It has triangular fog lamps and body colored bumpers. Hyundai’s i20 has a very sport look which is further enhanced by its 8 spoke alloy wheels. The rear has been proportionately styled and the hatchback looks equally good from the rear as from the front. It has been well built with excellent fit and finish.

Maruti Swift is one of the best selling hatchbacks and brings new and mature front design with upswept headlamps and tail lamps which look sporty and gives it contemporary looks. It has body colored bumpers with integrated fog lamps which adds to the styling and brings out the modern European looks of the car. Maruti Swift has an aggressive stance owing to the low slung look of the hatchback. It has flared wheel arches and sporty alloy wheel design. The build quality of the new Maruti Swift is very good and the paint quality is excellent.

Interiors – design, space and features:

Hyundai i20 in its latest avatar brings premium feel to its interiors with plenty of space, head room and leg room for taller passengers. The interiors features are similar to high end cars and they feel luxurious with good quality plastics and seats which provide excellent comfort and support to the body. Other features in the Hyundai i20 includes six airbags for safety, seatbelt warning lights, fully automatic temperature control, and integrated stereo music system with CD, MP3, Aux-in and USB compatibilities with 4 speakers and 2 tweeters and steering mounted audio and Bluetooth controls. Hatchback i20 has an instrument console with MID which shows you outside temperature, time, day and date. Hyundai i20 also brings 295 liters of boot space to store your travel luggage.

Maruti Swift has very good interior features and brings black interiors with accents of silver inside the car. There is plenty of leg room and head room in the new Swift and that makes it a comfortable drive for all its passengers. It offers height adjustable drivers seats and steering mounted audio controls for its 6 speaker CD/MP3 music system with Aux and USB compatibilities. Swift brings climate control and airbags with an easy to read instrument cluster packed with features including MID. Maruti Swift has an air conditioner which is an absolute chiller even under hot summer conditions. Swift brings 206 liters of luggage carrying capacity in its boot.

Engine – performance, power, torque, fuel economy, smoothness:

Hyundai i20 brings us 3 engine options. The 1.4 litre Gamma petrol engine produces 98 BHP at 5500 RPM and 13.9 kg-m of torque at 4200 RPM and is available in 4 speed auto-transmission. It is a punchy motor which has good drivability. It delivers 15kmpl as certified by ARAI. Hyundai i20 with the 1.2 litre Kappa Dual VTVT petrol engine produces 84 PS of power and comes with a 5 speed manual transmission and as per ARAI it is rated to deliver a mileage of 17 kmpl. There is also a diesel variant which is a 1.4 litre CRDI diesel engine with a 6 speed manual transmission gearbox producing 90PS of power and 22.4 kgm of torque and is rated by ARAI to give a maximum fuel efficiency of 21.9 kmpl. The diesel variant has excellent acceleration and drivability is very good in the city and on the highways.

Maruti Suzuki Swift comes with the popular 1.2 liter engine four cylinder DOHC petrol engine which produces a maximum of 86 BHP at 6000 and 114 NM of maximum torque at 4000 RPM. Swift hot hatchback has a very refined engine which is smooth and the power delivery is very linear. There is plenty of torque throughout the power curve and the engine loves to be revved. Swift petrol variant has been rated by ARAI to deliver a maximum fuel efficiency of 18.6 kmpl. Maruti Swift Diesel brings the 1.3 liter DDiS engine which produces a maximum power of 74 BHP at 4000 RPM and a maximum torque of 190 NM at 2000 RPM and as per ARAI certification delivers 20kmpl. It offers excellent drivability and ease of use .There is plenty of power for solid highway performance and spirited driving as well.

Suspension – Ride, comfort and handling:

Hyundai i20 drives well and has been given a good suspension setup and brings a compliant ride quality. It has well designed suspension which absorbs all the bumps and undulations and provides a comfortable ride. Hyundai i20 handles well and has well sorted suspension which ensures the body roll is minimized and the car turns in quickly around corners. The steering gives good feedback and is easy to handle. The overall handling has been improved and this makes it a fun to drive hatchback for enthusiasts. It has ABS and EBD which take care of the safety of the passengers while braking hard to a stop or slowing down on wet surfaces.

The new Maruti Swift has very good handling capabilities and retains its legacy from its predecessor. It has a plush ride quality which isn’t too firm and retains high level of comfort for all its passengers. The body roll is well controlled and this hatchback offers agile handling characterizes for all who love driving in a spirited manner will enjoy driving it. The steering unit offers excellent feedback and is well weighted making it a pleasure to drive this car anytime. It also brings safety features such as ABS + EBD including brake assist on the higher specced Swift variants which improve driver safety while braking.

Hyundai i20 brings a ton of features and Hyundai has done a fantastic job building this car. The pricing seems to be good and well thought out for this latest entrant in the hatchback segment. Hyundai i20 variants being with the petrol Hyundai i20 which is priced (ex-showroom Delhi) from 4.73 lakhs for the base model Hyundai i20 Era and top petrol variant is priced at 7.67 lakhs for the Hyundai i20 Sports AT 1.4. Hyundai i20 Asta 1.2 Petrol is priced at 6.21 lakhs. The diesel variant is priced from 5.96 lakhs for the Hyundai i20 1.4 Era diesel going up to 7.44 lakhs for the top variant i20 1.4 Asta Diesel. The pricing makes it a worthy competitor in the market and a wonderful choice of car to purchase.

Maruti Swift is available in two engine options and a variety of features and kit and has has been priced well by Maruti in India. The petrol variant of the Swift starts with the price (ex-showroom Delhi) of 4.39 lakhs for the base variant Swift LXI, the middle variant Swift VXI is priced at 4.79 lakhs and the top petrol variant Swift ZXI is available at a price of 5.63 lakhs. The diesel variant of the Swift starts with the price (ex-showroom Delhi) of 5.16 lakhs for the base variant Swift LDI, the middle variant Swift VDI is priced at 5.66 lakhs and the top petrol variant Swift ZDI is available at a price of 6.48 lakhs.

Hyundai i20 is one of the hottest looking hatchbacks in the market. Hyundai has done a fantastic job with the new i20 and given their wide service network they are certainly one of the best manufacturers of small cars in India. It is a difficult choice to make since the Maruti Swift is an equally good car and Maruti provides the best after sales experience hands down. It also has a low cost of ownership and cost of spares as compared to the Hyundai. Both the hatchbacks are excellent cars and it’s a difficult choice to make given all that they bring to the table and at an attractive price tag.
