Maruti Zen Estilo versus Hyundai Eon

  • Nov 11, 2012
Maruti Zen was one of the most popular small cars to have hit the Indian automobile market and over the last few years Maruti decided to update the Zen and overhauled it completely and rebadged it as the Maruti Zen Estilo. We compare it to one of the latest hot hatch from the segment Hyundai Eon and see how the evergreen Zen Estilo fares up against its newer counterpart from Hyundai.

Looks and design:

Maruti Zen Estilo after its redesign moved away from the small hatchback looks of the older Zen towards a more LUV – Light Utility Vehicle looks. It has been well designed with contemporary looks and stands out as a good looking car in its class. It sports large headlamps, fog lamps on large front bumper. It has been built well by Maruti with satisfactory fit and finish.

Hyundai Eon is the newest hot hatch in Hyundai’s small car portfolio and takes forward the fluidic design element. It has big headlamps which are well sculpted, sporty fog lamps on a huge bumper. The rear has been designed in proportion with the front end and the car looks good from the rear too. The build quality is very good and so are the fit, finish and paint quality on this hot hatchback.

Interiors – design, space and features:

Maruti Zen Estilo brings two tone interiors now instead of the all beige interiors seen in the earlier iteration. The front and rear seats provide moderate level of comfort but there is sufficient leg and head room. The Maruti Zen Estilo comes with driver side airbag, power windows and good air con. There are cubbyholes and spacious glovebox while the boot can store your small travel luggage efficiently.

Hyundai Eon gets good interiors and the fit and finish is above par for a car in this segment. It will easily seat four adult passengers and there is plenty of leg and head room inside the spacious cabin. It comes with a CD/MP3 music system, stylish center control panel, MID and analog speedometer and effective air conditioning amongst other features. It has cubbyholes and other small storage areas inside along with a boot space of 215 liters for your small luggage.

Hyundai Eon sports a 3 cylinder, 814cc petrol engine which makes 56 BHP at 5500 RPM and maximum torque of 76 NM at 4000 RPM and is mated to a 5 speed gearbox. It offers very good drivability owing to the ample low end torque which makes driving in city conditions a breeze. Suspension – Ride, comfort and handling:

Maruti Zen Estilo has been tuned for comfort and not for handling unlike the original Zen. There is a fair bit of body roll experienced as you push the car around the turns it does not inspire confidence. The steering does not give very good feedback but remains light weighted at low and high speeds. The brakes have good stopping power combined with the ABS and the car is easy to drive with its small turning radius in the city.

Hyundai Eon is well endowed with very good suspension package that makes sure of passenger comfort at all times. It has a ride quality that is comfortable and yet manages to go around the curves without too much body roll. It has good ground clearance and will take you over the worst of roads without too much worry about its underbody. The brakes are powerful and will slow you down to a stop safely from higher speeds.

Maruti Zen Estilo has been priced well however the top variant with ABS does seem a bit pricey given the level of kit that is available on that variant.

It fares well against the Hyundai Eon which is an excellent car and brings modern features, top of the segment in looks and design and Hyundai’s service network is only second to that of Maruti. It’s always a tough choice between cars of the two manufacturers as they are generally very good value for money. Which of the two would be your choice of car?
