It brings a powerful engine, loads of performance and fuel efficiency and makes for a wonderful ownership experience. Maruti has yet again found success in their product and SX4 has been one of their best yet. We compare the Maruti SX4 with its counterpart from Hyundai which is one of the top 10 manufacturers of passenger cars in the country. Hyundai Verna Fluidic is the latest version of their premium mid size sedan and one of the hottest looking sedans in the market today. We find out how the two petrol engine variants of these cars perform against each other.

Looks and design:


Maruti Suzuki SX4 is a macho looking and stunningly beautiful sedan that was launched a few years ago and was quite radical for its time. It brought aggressive looks owing to its huge headlamps and sporty mesh grille and rounded fog lamps which give it a muscular look overall and helped it become a success for Maruti. SX4 has a superb road presence and the car bears a proportionate design from the front to the back. Even the side profile with the 10 spoke alloy wheels gives the car a fantastic look from the side and the flared wheel arches make it seem more muscular. Maruti has taken great care to ensure there is very good build quality on this car and it has excellent fit and finish worthy of a premium sedan.


Hyundai Verna Fluidic is a gorgeous looking car in its new face lifted form and follows Hyundai’s new styling and flowing design theme known as ‘fluidic’. The new Verna Fluidic has very contemporary styling and looks fantastic owing to its flowing body lines and sharp looking headlamps which give the new Verna quite a character. It has beautifully designed alloy wheels which add to the muscular looks of the car. Verna Fluidic has sporty looking fog lamps on its huge bumper on the front and adds to the aggressive styling. It is a well rounded car and brings you the feel of quality and luxury. Hyundai has retained fantastic build quality while the fit and finish is top notch and paintjob has a deep shine to it.

Interiors – design, space and features:


Maruti Suzuki SX4 Diesel bears complete resemblance to its petrol counterpart when it comes to the interiors and brings great features such as comfortable seats which provide very lateral support and are high set making it easy to get in and out of the car. This high sedan brings loads of leg room and head room inside and will comfortably seat 5 people inside. SX4 also brings excellent goodies such as the Kenwood stereo music system with CD player, MP3 and FM radio support. It has a functional speedometer, tachometer and MID which also displays outside temperature and these look great at night and are highly visible during the day. SX4 sedan’s upholstery matches the interiors of the car giving a luxurious feel to it. The fit and finish of the car is very acceptable. SX4 sedan has features such as climate control rear defogger, adjustable shoulder anchor, power-steering and power windows. It comes with an excellent 504 liter of boot space.


Hyundai Verna Fluidic brings comfortable seats with leather upholstery and they provide amazing comfort to the driver and passenger by giving great back and under thigh support. It has well made interiors with dual tone dashboard with high quality plastic with anti-slip feel to its surface. It sports a functional instrument cluster on the dash which looks quite modern and has MID which shows external temperature, instant FE etc. Verna Fluidic now features integrated stereo music system which produces a high quality sound. There are additional features such as the automatic electronic climate control system with 12 adjustments, height adjustable driver seat, 60:40 split folding rear seats and more. Verna Fluidic brings ample storage space inside the car. Verna also comes with a cooled glove box and comes with a boot space of 465 liters.

Engine – performance, power, torque, fuel economy, smoothness:


Maruti Suzuki SX4 is an excellent performer in its 1.6 liter petrol engine avatar. It produces excellent power from its 1.6 liter four cylinder engine which is mated to a five speed manual transmission and develops a maximum power of 102 BHP at 5500 PRM and 145 NM of torque at 4100 RPM. It has plenty of low end grunt to power the car from a standstill and is very fast on the highway runs and capable of holding triple digit speeds for the whole day. It has been rated by ARAI to deliver a maximum fuel efficiency of 15.5 kmpl making it a fuel efficient performance sedan in the market today.


Hyundai Verna is a very capable car and comes with a power petrol engine in its 1.4 liter variant. The 1.4 liter engine develops a maximum power of 105 BHP at 6300 and maximum of 135 NM of torque at 5000 RPM and comes with a 5 speed gearbox and is on par with its main rival SX4. This engine has oodles of low end torque which is important for driving in the city in bumper to bumper traffic conditions and the car brings clutch that isn’t too heavy reducing discomfort to the driver. The 5 speed manual transmission ensures excellent drivability under all circumstances and the car is quite a performer in city and on the highways. Verna Fluidic 1.4 has been rated by ARAI to deliver a maximum fuel efficiency of 17.43 kmpl.

Suspension – Ride, comfort and handling:


Maruti Suzuki SX4 Diesel despite its slightly heavier engine is a very good handling car and it ensures high level of comfort and stability despite the additional weight and shows no weakness in handling. It manages to give a well cushioned ride and the suspension is well tuned to accommodate any road conditions prevailing in the country. SX4 has mature handling capabilities of a higher segment car and enthusiasts and normal drivers alike will be amused by its handling prowess. It comes with ABS + EBD to help you slow down from high speeds and body roll is very well controlled on the SX4 and steering is well weighted on this car let you enjoy a comfortable drive.


Hyundai Verna Fluidic has a well tuned suspension setup courtesy Hyundai and it has improved over its predecessor. It has a very comfortable ride quality and maintains passenger comfort without bottoming out or being too bouncy. The body roll has been minimized greatly in the new version which now inspires confidence going around a curve. The new Verna Fluidic has a responsive steering unit which is well weighted and provides excellent feedback to the driver and is quite light at lower speeds. Verna Fluidic sedan as very good ride quality and manages to be a comfortable driving absorbing all the undulations on the road. It has ABS + EBD to help slow it down quickly from high speeds it is very capable of achieving.

Maruti has brought excellent features into their sedan SX4 and the petrol version is an excellent car which brings a good combination of looks, style, performance and reliability which is synonymous with Maruti cars. It also brings excellent handling capabilities for the enthusiast in us. Maruti has priced the SX4 petrol variant at price (ex-showroom Delhi) starting from 7 lakhs for the entry level SX4 VXi and 8.09 lakhs for the top variant SX4 ZXI. The automatic transmission version is priced at 8.41 lakhs for the SX4 ZXi AT. The pricing is quite spot on and that makes it a value for money purchase for anyone.

Hyundai Verna Fluidic is one of the hottest sedans on the market today and is packed with plenty of modern features and goodies. It offers excellent performance and engine options and brings good fuel economy at very good value. The ex-showroom Delhi price for the new Verna Fluidic ranges from 7.08 lakhs for the base model petrol 1.4 L Verna Fluidic VTVT going up to 9.77 lakhs for the petrol 1.6 L Verna Fluidic SX VTVT AT. The diesel variant starts from 8.19 lakhs for the base model 1.4 L Verna Fluidic CRDi going up to 10.88 lakhs for the top diesel variant 1.6 L Verna SX CRDi. The pricing for the different engine options is great and that makes the Verna Fluidic a total value for money car that you can buy.
