The attention that compact SUV segment is getting in India is way beyond numbers. Almost all the manufacturers who entered the segment saw the rise in the sales chart figures. Now, the number two manufacturer of the country - Hyundai is all ready with its offering in the compact SUV segment. The ix25 in the Chinese market will come to India as Creta and we drove the vehicle today to see how the car and how it would fare in one of the most competitive segments in India.

Exterior:

Following the Fluidic Sculpture 2.0, Hyundai has designed Creta on a completely new platform. The car does not looks muscular but it sure will bring something very fresh and off-the-beat in the market. The Creta looks more premium than the competition and will surely turn more heads on the road.Creta 7

The front looks bulky with three slat chrome grille and huge Hyundai logo sitting in between. There are big projector lamps in the front with LED DRL (something very similar to the Active i20), the vertical fog lamps are placed in the heavily creased lower bumper. The Creta looks very modern and will make a good choice for young crowd.

The Creta looks like scaled down Santa Fe from the side. There are 17-inch diamond cut alloy wheels - a segment feature among many other. The Creta looks sharp and there is a strong crease running through the side of the vehicle, making it an interesting design element.

The rear gets split tail lamps, and a thick chrome strip on the back. It seems Hyundai designers did not put much of a thought while designing the rear. It looks plain and empty.

The Creta measures 4,260 mm in length, 1,780 mm in width and 1,630 mm in height. The wheelbase measures at 2,590 mm. Even though Hyundai is yet to release the official dimensions of the Creta, it is expected to be similar to the ix25.

Exterior Highlights:

  • 17-inch diamond cut alloys

  • Projector headlamps

  • Split-tail lamps

Interior:

The Creta features dual-tone interiors and leather wrapped steering wheel with only tilt adjustment. The standard infotainment system includes a 5-inch touch-screen display with optional 7-inch touch screens. The seats are leather wrapped and even though the car is smaller in dimensions than the Duster, the space inside is quite adequate to accommodate 5 adults comfortably. The Creta feels very premium from inside and the design has been done very thoughtfully. There are back-pockets in the front seats, leather inserts on the door panel, rear AC vents, and rear charging point. Hyundai has also given bottle holder on every door of the car, utilizing all the space very smartly.Creta 5

The infotainment system also works as a reversing camera display. The are as many as 6-speakers and steering mounted controls. The 1GB internal memory is also standard and overall touch and feel is very premium.

Even though the rear windows are smaller in size, Hyundai has raised the height of the rear seats, hence increasing the visibility and also eliminating any claustrophobia.

The NVH levels are excellent inside the car, Hyundai has used noise absorbing materials extensively and also has put anti-vibration floor mats in the car.

The power out of all three engines are exactly the same as the engines of new 4S Fluidic Verna. The 1.6 litre petrol has an output of 123 PS with 155Nm of torque, the diesel 1.6-litre delivers 128 PS and 260 Nm of torque, the 1.4-litre diesel churns a maximum of 90 PS with 220 Nm of torque. Hyundai will offer Creta petrol with 6-speed manual, while the diesel 1.6-litre engine will be offered with 6-speed manual or optional automatic gearbox. The 1.4-litre diesel engine will get a 5-speed transmission. The diesel automatic returns a phenomenal fuel efficiency of 21.1 km/l. No details were given about the other variants.

Engine Highlights:

  • First in class diesel automatic

  • High fuel efficiency of 21.1 km/l for diesel automatic

Drive:

The Creta is very light in weight, thanks to its hive structure that makes the car lighter and increases the stiffness at the same time. Only the 1.6-litre diesel automatic and manual were there for the test. The manual takes just 12.3 second from zero to 100 km/h. The car is quick and is fun to drive. The automatic did the same run in 13.2 seconds. The driving posture is very nice. Even though the suspensions are on a softer side - just like any other Hyundai vehicle, the Creta has handles better because of its stiff body.

Drive Highlights:

  • Quick acceleration

  • Stable at high speed corners

Verdict:

The Creta will create a lot of disruptions in the segment. Hyundai has played the right cards by offering a long feature list as well as important safety features. The car looks nice and drives nice too. Hyundai is yet reveal certain key information like the fuel economy and the price, it sure will be a big hit in the market. Hyundai will also introduce the first-in-class automatic transmission with a diesel engine. Hyundai will launch the automatic diesel in two variants - one top and one lower to penetrate the market in a better way.
