Yamaha YZF R3 is the bigger brother of the much-loved track-focused R15 with more than twice the fire power compared to the R15. The design is sharper than ever with twin headlamps up front splitting in the middle to make room for a small air duct. There's also a very useful windshield to slice through the air. YZF R3 (2015-2017) Expert Review

Here is what our experts feel about YZF R3 (2015-2017)

Yamaha YZF R3 is the bigger brother of the much-loved track-focused R15 with more than twice the fire power compared to the R15. The design is sharper than ever with twin headlamps up front splitting in the middle to make room for a small air duct. There's also a very useful windshield to slice through the air. Moving to the sides, the R3 shows off its beautiful, sharp and edgy fairing, and the front turn indicators can be seen poking out of them. The engine gets black coating along with the exhaust muffler. The exhaust is shorter than that on the R15 and gets a touch of silver at the end, which making it more stylish. Foot pegs for both, rider and pillion, are carved out of aluminium along with the rider's heel plate. Seats are split and the pillion sits rather high.

There's a large disc brake on the front wheel and a smaller one around the back. The wide tyres are wrapped around “Y” shaped, five-spoke alloy wheels. Using a monoshock at the rear makes the pillion seat, tail lamp cluster and number plate look like they are floating over the rear wheel.

The instrument console is a combination of analog and digital. The tachometer is analog while the LCD displays speed, fuel level, odometer, two trip meters, clock and engine temperature. One of the smile inducing features of the instrument console is the optimistic redline of 12,500 RPM showing off the high-revving nature of the twin-cylinder engine. The tail lamp also includes a high-set LED stop lamp.

On the safety front, absence of ABS is sorely missed on this premium sport bike.

The twin-cylinder, 321cc engine produces 42 PS of power at 10750 RPM and 29.6 Nm of torque at 9000 RPM. It gets fuel injection and liquid cooling and comes coupled with a six-speed transmission. It measures 2090mm in length, 720mm in width and 1135mm in height. The seat is 780mm high and the wheelbase and ground clearance measure 1380mm and 160mm, respectively. The fuel tank is rated to hold 14 litres and weighs 169kg with all fluids topped up to the brim. It'll be available in the widely advertised Racing Blue colour along with Black Lightning. The bike will compete against KTM's RC390 and Kawasaki's Ninja 300.
