Yamaha YZF R15 Road Test

It's fast, it’s aggressive. It can turn heads and it’s a track tool. It belongs to the reputed R-series of motorcycles from Yamaha and yes, it’s the R1 with 5 suffix.Long time back, when we heard that the Japs were working to upgrade the R15, we really wished and expected a few more horses squeezed into the metal mill. Then, after 2 years of launch of the original pocket-rocket R15, Yamaha came up with the version 2.0. It saw all the efforts being put into upgrading the visual aspects of the machine, and oh boy, were we spell bound? We all (or some of us) were more... [ Read More ]

Yamaha YZF R15 Review
  • Overview

First launched on June 15, 2008 the Yamaha YZF-R15 took the Indian motorcycling world by storm. It had the perfect blend of styling, performance and handling and it set new benchmarks and standards in the Indian motorcycle market. It had the best dynamics and race track handling seen amongst any other machine at the time of its launch. Since then Yamaha carried out some styling updates and eventually facelifted the model calling the new one as R15 v2.0.

The R15 v2.0 takes the legacy of the R1 inspired 150cc motorcycle forward with its newer design. Rear styling was previously lacking in the predecessor but now it has been improved. The front tyre is a 90/80-17 setup while the rear is a 130/70-17 size tyre. This is an increase of 10mm on the front and 30mm width at the rear respectively. The front fascia remains the same except for the difference in graphics but the side and the rear design have been overhauled.

New R15 gets R6 inspired styling elements and has now transformed into a complete stunner of a motorcycle. It also brings beautifully styled 10 spoke alloy wheels and vents in the front fairing. The new aluminium swingarm adds to its beefy looks and the upgrades in design make it a true small capacity super sport machine. At the heart of the motorcycle is the same engine although it comes with a slightly tweaked ECU. The engine is a 149cc 4 valve, OHC, Liquid Cooled motor that produces 16.7 Bhp of power at 8500 rpm and 15 Nm of torque at 7500 rpm. The final drive has been tweaked with different sprocket sizes and revised gearing and fueling aiding low end performance compared to the predecessors. The engine loves to be revved and redlined.

The gearbox results in slick shifts throughout and ensures that the rider is happy as the gears easily slot into place. With a claimed top speed of 140+ kmph, this motorcycle due to its aerodynamically efficient styling is able to get there. The 0 to 60 kmph timings have improved over the older model as well and in general it has improved the feel of the ride at lower speeds. Although from our experience the older version had better top end whack resulting in a punchier performance at higher revs. At the rev limiter the cut-off remains a little abrupt as ever!

The riding position is slightly on the aggressive side and getting used to will take atleast 3-4 days, especially on your wrists and arms. The seating is comfortable and the ride quality is compliant despite being on the firmer side it is comfortable. Yamaha claims a fuel efficiency of 46.93 kmpl many riders have seen the fuel efficiency hovering easily above the 40 kmpl. It is not just a good handling machine but also one that is relatively easily on your pocket. The new R15 v2.0 is easily available off the shelf at all Yamaha dealers and at New Delhi ex-showroom price of 1.10 Lakh it is still one of the top motorcycles to buy in the performance segment of the Indian two wheeler industry.
