Continental GT 650 Expert Review

Here is what our experts feel about Continental GT 650

When it comes to classic motorcycles segment, Royal Enfield is one of the world known brands. In India, it is the most popular premium motorcycle brand with monthly sales of around 70,000 units. The company recently introduced its new flagship motorcycle the Continental GT 650 in India with a price tag of Rs 2.65 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The cafe racer style retro bike looks much similar to the Continental GT 535 which took inspiration from the 1964's original Continental GT 250. The bike comes with a new 650cc parallel-twin engine which makes it the most powerful Royal Enfield motorcycle on sale. Also, it is the most affordable 650cc as well as twin-cylinder engine bike in the country.

The Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 is a retro modern motorcycle taking aesthetics inspiration from classic motorcycles with new-age engineering. The bike gets a squarish fuel tank with prominent knee recesses and a contoured seat with brat style stitching. The front features a classic round headlamp with round-shape rear view mirrors and a twin-pod instrument cluster.

The wire-spoke, 18-inch wheel rim further add to the retro appeal of the motorcycle while the twin, chrome finished up-swept exhaust set-up provides it with a sporty feel. The rear also gets a classic style tail lamp along with orange turn indicators. The model comes in three version offering single-tone, custom-style, dual-tone, and chrome colour options with complimenting matte black or chrome finish on the headlamp, rearview mirrors, and wheel rims.

Dinemtionally, the Continental GT 650 has a wheelbase of 1,398mm and it measures 2,122mm, 1,024mm and 744mm in length, height, and width respectively. The motorcycle has a ground clearance of 174mm and offers a seat height of 793mm. The fuel capacity is 12.5-litre and the bike weighs 198kg without fuel and lubricant.

At the heart of the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 is an all-new parallel twin-cylinder engine displacing 648cc. The engine comes with four-valve per cylinder head configuration for better scavenging and dual-pipe exhaust setup for exhilarating rumble sound. It is an air-cooled mill, however, gets an oil-cooler for better long-run performance. The engine is fed by an electronic fuel injection (EFI) system for better efficiency and throttle response.

The twin-pod engine comes mated to a six-speed gearbox which also gets a Slipper and Assist type clutch setup. It helps the rider in rev-matching and makes the gear transitions smoother as compared to a conventional clutch system. The new Royal Enfield motorcycle has fewer vibrations than its previous models and the engine feels quite refined.

The motor churns out 47PS of power at 7,250rpm and delivers a peak torque of 52Nm at 5,250rpm. The company claims that 80 percent of the torque is available at just 2,500rpm which helps in quick acceleration. The delivery of the powertrain is linear and it has a top speed of around 160kmph. Also, an under-stressed compression ratio of 9.5:1 makes the engine less sensitive to variance in fuel quality and you don't have to find specific high-quality petrol for it.

The Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 has been built on a new frame which, the company says, provides it with 20 percent more stiffness than the Continental GT 535. More stiffness offers the motorcycle with better agility, especially while carrying speed in the corners. The front of the motorcycle has been suspended on 41mm telescopic forks that offers 110mm travel while the rear gets gas charged suspensions with 88mm of travel. The sprint loaded dual shock absorbers at the rear offer 5-step adjustability for the preload setting.

With a 24-degree of rake and 105mm trail, the motorcycle offers nimble handling in city traffic. The 18-inch spoke wheels of the Continental GT comes shod with premium Pirelli rubber. The front wheel gets a 100/90 section tyre and a 130/70 section tyre comes on the rear wheel. The bike gets large 320mm disc brake up front and the rear gets a 240mm disc brake unit. The bike also gets a dual-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) as standard.

Large disc brakes of the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 offer impressive stopping power and the ABS offers safety in emergency braking situations. The premium tyres offer excellent grip and high ground clearance offers trouble-free rides on uneven Indian roads. The adjustable rear suspension offers versatility to the motorcycle and the analog instrument cluster also gets an LCD screen for the odo and trip meters.
