Discover 125 Expert Review

Here is what our experts feel about Discover 125

The Indian two-wheeler market is crammed with commuter bikes and Bajaj, undeniably, is one of the major players in this segment along with Hero and Honda. Bajaj is a fully Indian indigenous bike maker and introduced the Discover series to plug in the void left by Pulsar. The Discover series has earned much customer appreciations because of its high performance, fuel efficiency, and affordable pricing. The series currently has four bikes that include the Discover 100, Discover 125, Discover 150, and the Discover 125 ST. The entire series is targeted at the value-for-money customer with focus on performance and mileage. Discover 125 was re-launched this year.

The Bajaj Discover 125 is the upgraded version of its predecessor which was launched in 2004. The bike has since been a favourite of the Indian customer all these years. It retains the neat styling of the first generation Discover but has been equipped with some modern features. The Discover 125 now sports alloy wheels and blacked-out mechanicals. It forges the appearance of a sporty commuter bike. The vehicle is available in red, blue, and ebony black colour options. There are two variants of the Discover 125, one with drum brakes and the other with the disc brake. The biggest takeaway from the Discover 125 is the superb fuel efficiency that’s typical of Bajaj. The bike offers an economy of around 70kmpl even in start-and-top city traffic conditions. The mileage factor has been a clincher for the entire Discover series.

The standard Discover 125 drum-brake model is priced at ?54,669. Its closest competitions are the Honda CB Unicorn 160, Hero Passion Pro, and the Bajaj Pulsar 150.

The Bajaj Discover has been in the Indian market for close to 15 years now and not much has changed regarding the design. It has become a pretty known face to customers. The styling of the bike is not great to talk about since the company’s focus is on performance and not on the looks. Bajaj has stuck to the bare basics with its Discover range. The 125 variant has a straightforward design with the trademark Bajaj branding on the paint. A lot of curves are included in the styling, which sets the bike apart from its peers in the hugely competitive 125cc segment. The signature headlamp is one component that defines the Discover’s size. It is large compared to the rest of the vehicle and is easily recognisable.  The semi-digital speed console further enhances the sporty look of the bike.

The Bajaj Discover 125 is powered by a single cylinder, air-cooled 124.6cc DTS-i engine which produces 11bhp and a peak torque of 10.80Nm. The motor is mated to a 5-speed gearbox. The top speed of the Discover 125 is 110kmph. All members in the Discover series are utility bikes targeted at the city rider. While one would rarely attempt to reach 0-60kmph, the Discover 125 manages to make it within seven seconds. The upright riding position is typical to any daily commuter bike and ensures a stress-free ride on city roads. But cruising on the highway is a problem with the engine losing response over time.

The Discover 125 is fitted with conventional hydraulic telescopic forks in the front and hydraulic gas-charged coil springs at the back. The suspension setup is borrowed from the earlier version of the Discover 125. The suspension safely holds the vehicle in position and there’s nothing to complain about the combination which manages to deliver a plush ride in the city and also on long highways. A big change introduced in the new Bajaj Discover 125 from its earlier version is the wider 17-inch 100/90 tyre at the back. This makes the ride quality smother, ensuring enhanced stability. But there’s no ABS and traction control system on the bike. The Discover 125 is the perfect vehicle for those hunting for a city riding bike.
