RSV4 Expert Review

Here is what our experts feel about RSV4

The Aprilia RSV4 RF is the flagship offering from the Italian two-wheeler manufacturer. Aprilia RSV4 is the definition of perfect harmony between speed, power, agility, and sophistication. The “RF” stands for Race Factory is very apt for this production bike as it is the closest, almost similar to the MotoGP race superbikes. The spectacular superbike, Aprilia RSV4 is such a phenomenon that right from the moment it was launched back in 2009, in the very first season of World Superbike racing, Max Biaggi racing on the RSV4 reached the podium nine times and also won the race at the Brno Circuit. So intense and ferocious was its onslaught that it completely dominated the 2010 and 2012 seasons of the World Superbike championship. All of these culminates in winning 54 championship titles in such a short lifespan which gives us an idea of the unrelenting and unstoppable force this superbike is. The latest model of the 4th generation RSV4 comes with a host of features that still makes it one of the best liter-class superbikes among its rivals like the BMW S 1000 RR, Yamaha YZF-R1, Suzuki GSX R1000R, and Honda CBR1000RR. The Aprilia RSV4 RF is priced at Rs.25,68,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi).

As you gaze your eyes upon the Aprilia RSV4 RF it stands out with the unique graphic design that maintains the evocative look of the MotoGP version. Aprilia RSV4 is a fully faired superbike, designed on a race inspired theme. Twin headlamp section looks elegant with a positioning light at the centre. Clear lens turn-indicators fitted on the twin rear view mirrors look very attractive and are attached to the front visor. It also sports a well-sculpted fuel tank that has the proper creases to tuck in your leg and grip it while racing. The sporty seat offers optimum comfort and holds to the rider while racing. On the rear, you see a stylish LED tail lamp and the clear lens turn indicators which look very sporty. This superbike now gets the new full-color TFT digital instrument panel which is almost a computer. It lets you connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth, to calibrate settings, view info just like they do in the actual races. It also includes the infotainment system to manage voice commands and calls from your smartphone.

RSV4 is propelled by Aprilia’s longitudinal 65 degrees tilted, 999.6cc, V-4 cylinder, 4-stroke, liquid cooling system, double overhead camshafts, (DOHC), four valves per cylinder engine. It is the world's first full-scale production motorcycle with a high performance small V4 engine. It produces an earth-shattering, maximum power of 201hp at 13000rpm along with a peak torque of 115Nm at 10500rpm. This superbike features a mechanical slipper clutch with a multi-disc oil-bath system and mated to the engine via a 6-speed cassette type gearbox. The fuel system has an airbox with front dynamic air intakes coupled with 4 Marelli 48-mm throttle bodies with eight injectors and the latest generation Ride-By-Wire engine management makes it a clear winner. As per your ride preferences, you can choose between 3 different ride modes of T (Track), S (Sport), and R (Race) on the fly. It also has the famed Aprilia Performance Ride Control (APRC) which is a well known dynamic control suite and is the most refined from those currently available. Fuel tank capacity is 18.5-litre with an included 4-litre reserve.

RSV4 RF is the only Aprilia superbike in which you get the new Ohlins suspension systems and lightweight aluminium forged rims as standard equipment. On the front end, it has Öhlins NIX fork with a travel of 120 mm and is adjustable for spring preload, hydraulic compression, and rebound damping. On the rear is the Öhlins TTX monoshock with a travel of 120 mm and piggy-back which is fully adjustable with spring preload, wheelbase, and hydraulic compression and rebound damping. This bike gets a special 17-inch 5-split spoke, wholly machined forged aluminum alloy wheels. These lightweight wheels run on sticky tubeless 3.5-inch wide 120/70 ZR section tyre at the front and a 6-inch wide 200/55 ZR section tyre at the back. Brake setup at the front includes the dual 330mm diameter floating stainless steel disc with lightweight stainless steel rotor, Brembo M50 monobloc callipers with opposing pistons and a radial pump. On the rear, the brake setup consists of a 220mm disc, a Brembo calliper with two separate pistons and a pump with an integrated tank. Both the ends also have sintered pads, and a metal braided brake hose as well.

Aprilia RSV4 being a superbike not just has ABS, but a Bosch 9.1 MP ABS with cornering function which is adjustable to 3 maps and equipped with Rear wheel Lift-up Mitigation (RLM) which can be easily disabled when not required. It also includes a host of safety features thanks to the APRC System (Aprilia Performance Ride Control), which consists of the ones below. Aprilia Traction Control (ATC) which is adjustable on the fly thanks to a practical joystick and comes with up to 8 settings. Aprilia Wheelie Control (AWC) which has three levels and can be adjusted on the fly is now more precise thanks to the repositioning of the inertial platform. Specially made for track Aprilia Launch Control (ALC) is far more effective with new operating strategies and has 3 level settings. Aprilia Cruise Control (ACC) and Aprilia Speed Limiter (APL), are speed governers for highways and pitlanes respectively. All of the above systems can be configured and deactivated independently.
