Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) is all set to launch its first BS-VI compliant two-wheeler on 12 June. The company has released a brief teaser with a picture of a pin falling to the ground. The picture’s caption reads ‘Please hold a pin drop silence.’
While the company is yet to clarify whether the new two-wheeler will be a motorcycle or a scooter, industry experts believe that the vehicle will be the latter. The reason behind why Honda may be planning to introduce a scooter stems from the fact that a test vehicle was spotted near the Automobile Research Association of India (ARAI) facility at Pune in March. The vehicle was heavily camouflaged. Nonetheless, the instrument cluster and the body panels suggest that the two-wheeler is likely to be a new model of the Activa. Now whether the upcoming vehicle will be the 2019 Activia 125 or the Activa 6G, has not been confirmed, speculation is rife that it is more likely to be the latter.
It has been quite some time that the Honda Activa 125 has received a major update. The 125cc is one of the most competitive segments in the Indian scooter market and Honda would not want to miss out on all the action.
The current Activa 125 is hauled by a 124.9cc motor which produces 8.3PS maximum power at 6,500rpm. The two-wheeler, as claimed by Honda, returns a mileage of 60kmpl. However, the biggest update that the Activa 125 is likely to get, is in the form of a BS-VI compliant, fuel-injected engine. It remains to be seen whether Honda tweaks the motor to output more power. The new Honda Activa 125, in that case, will be the second fuel-injected scooter to be sold in India after the new Hero Maestro Edge 125.
The 2019 Honda Activa 125 is expected to command an ex-showroom price of INR62,000. It will mainly compete against Suzuki Access and the TVS NTorq 125 in its class.
