TVS has confirmed to launch its new flagship, the Akula 310, before the end of the current financial year i.e. before March 2017
Looking at the impressive market performance of its latest Apache RTR 200 4V, TVS has decided to increase focus on the premium bike segment. The company is already doing well in the segment, however, it wants a bigger piece of the cake with new products in near future. And the next big thing coming from the house of the Chennai-based automaker is its new flagship, the Akula 310, which has been confirmed for this financial year.
Arun Siddharth, vice-president, marketing (motorcycles) of TVS Motors, confirmed that the first model developed under the TVS-BMW alliance will be launched before the current financial year end. "Even though both the companies will be using the same platform, each one of us will have our own approach to design and development of the products," he added.
First showcased as a racing concept at the 2016 Auto Expo, the TVS Akula 310 is based on the upcoming BMW G 310 R, which is all set to enter the market anytime soon. Apart from the 313cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine, the bikes also share components such as the suspension set-up and wheels. The trellis frame of the faired machine has also been derived from the streetfighter model but gets some tweaks, along with a completely revised sub-frame.
The DOHC motor provides 34PS of power and 28Nm of torque to the BMW G 310 R, which is expected to remain unchanged in the TVS Akula 310 as well. The unveiled concept model of the Akula was looking totally track-focused but the production model could be a sports-tourer to match the requirements of the Indian market. That means, the production-spec bike will get a slightly raised handlebar along with comfortable seats for two. Talking about the pricing of the bike, it is expected to be near that of the KTM RC 200, which means somewhere around Rs 2 lakh in the Indian market.
