Things to check before buying a used car

Buying a used car an interesting and challenging situation as you have to ensure that you do not get cheated in the process. After you have zeroed in on a particular car go for it. But before that thoroughly check the car and other important things related to the ownership of the car.

While checking the car do take care to follow these tips:

  • Check for how many years the car has run. Normally if the car has run for 51-20 km and is 3-5 year old then it is a good buy. For that check the mileometer reading of the car and calculate with the year of manufacture. However, keep in mind that mileometer can be tempered with.

  • Engine of the car is important. So, make sure that the engine of the car is smooth, and does not make lot of noise. A smooth engine gives an idea about the health of the car. A good engine does not make any too much noise, or emits blue or black smoke.

  • You should make sure that the tyres are in a good condition. If they are in a bad shape then you can bargain for reduction in the price of the car.

  • Make sure that the car has not been repainted to hide its old age. You can check the bonnet to know that. If there are many signs of wear and tear around the battery area then it means that the car has not been maintained well.

  • Battery is also an important part of the car. So, check if the battery of the car is in a good condition, otherwise look for some reduction in the price of the car.

  • Also look for the music system in the car and ensure that it is working smoothly. Do not fall for the claim of the car owner.

  • Check other parts of the car like electrical components, lightings and dippers, cabin lights, hind lights and reverse lights. You also must ensure that air conditioning of the car is working well.

You should also make sure that all the documents related to the car are in proper condition. Also make sure that the car owner is the first owner of the car. Do check the registration certificate of the car. Also check to make sure that RC is not duplicate. You can check with the RTO for further authentication. Do check that the engine no. and chasis no. are matching with the numbers in the registration papers.

Check the state of registration. If the state is registered in one state and you plan to use the car in some other state then you need to do some documentation with the RTO for transferring the registration of the car you plan to buy.

Also check the insurance certificate. Try to know about any accident met by the car or any accident claims by the car owner. Pollution Under Control certificate is also an important document to get. Before buying the car ensure that the car seller gives you the papers related to road tax or clears all payments before he sells the car to you.

If you are going to buy a car that was bought on finance, then ensure that you get the original invoice of the car. Also get the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the car finance company.
