The Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire is India’s highest selling compact sedan, and with good reason. It is one of the first compact sedans to have hit the market and got everything spot on. The Swift DZire is a well profiled car even though it is actually based on the Swift hatchback. The roofline, c-pillar and boot have been blended together rather well.

The Maruti Swift DZire offers a good amount of space inside the cabin for front and rear passengers for a car of it’s size. The lively beige interiors make the car not only look premium but also makes it feel more spacious and airy than it actually is. The Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire is also a well equipped car in it’s segment as the top end variants come fitted with power windows all around, a double-din stereo with steering mounted audio controls, tilt adjustable steering, height adjustable driver’s seat, electrically operated ORVMs, day/night mirror, front and rear fog lamps, remote central locking, alloy wheels, rear defogger, anti-lock braking system and airbags.

Maruti Suzuki’s Swift DZire is powered by a 1.2 litre, naturally aspirated, four cylinder petrol engine, while bulk of Swift DZire sales are accounted for by India’s favourite diesel engine, the 1.3 litre, turbocharged, four cylinder, MultiJet diesel engine. Both engines are reliable and offer good driveability and fuel efficiency.

Ertiga is a fashionable MPV to own, it sports a well proportionate body, on the front is a radiating huge headlight cluster fitted with potent halogen lights as well as turn indicators. The creatively sculpted radiator grille has horizontal slats, and the design of body colour bumper is huge and admirable. The side view is elegant contributed by expressive fenders, sleek window frames and attractive design. The black A and B pillars along with exterior mirrors and door handles build the aesthetic value of the car. The back portion is attractive, the tail lights emit powerful radiation, the huge windscreen heightens the elegance factor of the car, and the exceptionally fashionable boot is packed with jazzy chrome inserts, and the stylish back bumper has extra brake light and also couple of reflectors.

Being based on the Swift hatchback means that the car has a relatively good looking front end. Maruti has done a great job of blending in the boot of the car. The rear door has a large window and the C-pillar has been blended well with the boot. The black A and B pillars contribute towards making the car more appealing.

The boot itself is a small one as this is a compact sedan, this gives the car a short rear overhang, making for a sporty rear stance. At the back, the car has large tail lamps, a thick strip of chrome runs in between then and over the U-shaped license plate holder and a large bumper housing the rear fog lamp at the bottom centre section.

The interior cabin room of Ertiga is vastly spacious and plush, with high grade equipments; the décor is amazingly contemporary, with vibrant two tone colour theme. The professionally designed dashboard has ample storage sports, instrument panel, robust air con units and music system. The seats are super comfy with centre arm rest and headrests, the cockpit area have a couple of individual seats one with height adjustment facility and the other is driver’s seat. It is a seven seat car engineered with 2+3+2 configuration, and the rear bench is foldable. The most loaded car has three spoke steering fitted with audio controls, and the instrument cluster has digital clock, low fuel warning lamp and door ajar reminder, and the other interesting features are cabin lights, dual front sun visors, drink holders and accessory power socket.

Inside, the Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire has a lively cabin with beige interiors while the top of the dashboard is finished in black and lends a nice visual break. Quality of plastics used is good and so is fit and finish and panel gaps. The switch gear feels good to operate and feel upmarket. All though, the head lamp and wiper stalks could be better.

The seats on the Maruti Swift DZire are accommodating units that offer good comfort. The seats are cushioned well. The front seats offer good upper back support. The rear seats while offering adequate cushioning fall short in leg room and head room for tall passengers.

Top end variants of the Swift DZire is a well equipped and come loaded with an array of comfort and convenience features. Safety features aboard the car includes front airbags and anti-lock braking system.

Engine

Ertiga is sold with petrol, CNG and diesel engines, the petrol model is fitted with an advanced 1.4 litre K series engine with phenomenal 1373cc displacement power, it has 16 valves and four cylinders engineered with the advanced DOHC valve configuration technology and the transportation of fuel happens via multipoint injection technology. The engine pumps out 130Nm and 93.7bhp, and is coupled with five speed manual transmission gearbox. The CNG car is high on energy and gives out 110Nm and 80.9bhp, and the diesel car is inserted with an innovative 1.3 litre DDiS engine fitted with common rail fuel injection technology, it has 16 valves, four cylinders with 1248cc displacement power. The mill is connected to turbocharger that churns 200Nm and 88.8bhp linked to five speed manual gearbox. 

Engine

The Maruti Swift DZire is available with the choice of a petrol or diesel engine. The 1.2 litre four cylinder petrol engine develops 87PS of power @ 6,000 rpm and 114Nm of torque @ 4,000 rpm. The engine has an ARAI rated efficiency figure of 19.1 km/l.

The diesel fueled Swift DZire is powered by a 1.3 litre four cylinder turbo diesel engine developing 75PS of power @ 4,000 rpm and 190Nm of torque @ 2,000 rpm. The ARAI claimed efficiency figure for the car is 23.4 km/l.

Both engines are mated to five-speed manual gearboxes while a four-speed automatic unit is also on offer for the petrol Swift DZire in mid spec VXi trim. The Maruti Swift DZire automatic has an ARAI claimed efficiency figure of 17.4 km/l.

Ride Handling

The diesel and petrol power trains are linked to 5-speed manual transmission gearbox, the petrol car reaches a distance of 100kmph in only 14 seconds, and from standstill it attains a speed of 155kmph within the same time frame. The diesel car can escalate from 0 to 100kmph in only 15 seconds and the highest attainable speed is 160kmph. The CNG car reaches 150kmph and can cover 100 kmph in 16 seconds. 

Ride Handling

The Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire is under pinned by McPherson strut front suspension and a torsion beam suspension setup at the rear. There are disc brakes at the front and drums at the rear.

The chassis of the car is well balanced and gives the driver an idea of what the car is doing at all times. Pushing it around corners allows the driver to know the level of grip the car is offering at all times. The steering while communicative is an electronic unit and could do with more feed back. The brakes provide good bite and are adequate for the car.

Overall, the Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire feels good to drive with good driver feedback and well sorted drive dynamics.

Suspension Comfort

Ertiga has a proficient suspension system that enables extended stability in any challenging terrain, the front axle has McPherson strut suspension and the rear has torsion beam suspension. The braking system is efficient, with rear drum brakes and front disc brakes, and the anti-lock brake system has brake assist and electronic brake force distribution, the tilt type of electric power assisted steering system supports 5.2 meter turn radius, and handling it is a breeze particularly under hefty traffic circumstances.

Suspension Comfort

The suspension setup of the Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire is tuned to deliver the optimum balance between handling and comfort. While there is some amount of body roll during high speed corners, the system cushions the ride well. Bad roads and potholes are dismissed well for a car in this segment. Road noise is reasonably contained too. Although, NVH levels are higher in the diesel model as compared to the petrol DZire.
