Yesterday we carried an exclusive story of the Renault Duster that will soon be launched into the market. An all new compact SUV segment will be created as a result. Ford India has lined-up the EcoSport as their challenger. The EcoSport's global unveiling had taken place on the sidelines of the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo following which there hasn't been any news about the SUV. Recently, our friends at IndianAutosBlog.com managed to grab a picture of an EcoSport test mule in Chennai.
What's interesting is that, the compact off-roader had TDCi badges all over, thus clearing any prevailing doubts about a diesel version. That said, the EcoSport diesel in Titanium trim is expected to get the same 1.5 litre diesel engine that features on the new global Fiesta. We have driven the new Fiesta sedan in diesel guise and it is no less than a hoot to drive. We expect similar power and torque figures on the Ecosport as well.
Now, there are still some doubts about an all-wheel drive variant of the EcoSport since this will be placed as an entry-level SUV. Having said that, a Powershift automatic variant would be the better option rather shoving-in an added differential at the back. Price is expected to be under the Rs 10 lakh mark with the main rivals being the Duster, XUV500 etc.
