Expert Test Drive Review
The XUV 500 is a good place to be in. This is thanks to multimple factires. The first thing you notice when you enter the vehicle are the illuminated sill with XUV 500 branding, and the blue-backlit surfaces all around, this make it cool. You also notice the large windows, which make the cabin feel very airy. Couple this with the black and beige upholstery and beige seats, you get a inviting package.
The dashboard is heavily stylised, with striking A/C vents, a prominent 7-inch screen at the centre and neatly laid-down controls for the multimedia and A/C system below it. The 4-spoke steering wheel is chunky and features controls for the multimedia, hands-free telephony and cruise-control system. The dual-pod instrument cluster also gets blue-backlighting and looks very cool. The analogue dials feature digital screens in the centre which show multiple car-related information, and add to the occassion.
The front and second row seats are well bolstered, the second-row seat can fit three people in comfort. The third row is best suited for children though, as the knee-up position is not good on long trips. The luggage space is hampered with all the seats up, even fitting a laptop bag is difficult with the third row up. But fold the third row and you get 702 litres of space, while folding the second row gives you 1512-litres of space, with an almost flat floor.
The features inside the XUV 500 make it very premium.
The Mahindra XUV 500 has a unique design, it combines the brawn of an SUV with softer design cues taken from cars. The tall profile is improsing but curvy design themes and a lower floor make it look unique. At the front, the XUV 500 features projector headlamps withS-shaped LED DRLs places in between, the front grille features 'tooth-like' design which has become a design standard across the Mahindra lineup, the front bumper is highly sculpted and features large fog-lamps with prominent chrome surrounds which may divide opinion.
From the side, the XUV 500 has the typical SUV stance, which is intertwined with modern design cues. The wheel arches are prominent, the windows are large and the door panels feature light sculpting. The large windows point to an airy cabin, which is a huge plus. The wheel arches make the tyres look small, Mahindra should have offered the XUV with fatter, larger profile tyres.
At the rear, the mishmash of the design is jarring. The tall tail-lamps with weird engravings are a distraction in an otherwise well design package, the semi-ciicular panel just below the rear wiper looks like an afterthought. The design is saved thanks to the meaty looking dual-exhausts.
Whatever be your taste, there is not denying the fact that the XUV 500 is an attention grabber.
The Mahindra XUV 500 is powered by a 2.2-litre, turbocharged 4-cylinder diesel mHawk engine. This develops 140 PS @ 3750 rpm and 330 Nm @ 1600 - 2800 rpm. Coupled to a six-speed manual transmission and thanks to a low weight of 2510 Kg, the XUV 500 is sprightly. The gearbox can be notchy from time to time though, which does hamper the driving experience. The engine has a good growling note at higher speeds, but emits a soothing hum at cruising speeds.
The 2.2-litre engine may be a good performer, but it is also frugal if driven in moderation. Mahindra has added brake-energy recovery system to the car which has improved its efficiency from 15.1 km/l to 16 km/l.
The AWD system on the W8 and W10 variants make the XUV 500 a very good all-rounder. The lack of a differential lock and dedicated off-road kit hinder its off-roading capabilites but this is the SUV you want to be in whatever the road conditions be outside.
The Mahindra XUV 500 is fairly fuel-efficient for a SUV of its class. The 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine has a fuel-efficiency figure of 16 km/l as certified by ARAI. Remapped ECU, re-tuned gear ratios, an innovative brake energy recovery system and an intelligent alternator helps improve the efficiency of the SUV.
Mahindra has not been the best at after-sales service, with many customers of the earlier XUV 500 reporting niggling problems. Mahindra may have improved quality of the XUV 500, but it remains to be seen if they make the ownership experience better on the longer run.

The XUV 500 is unique in its segment as it is one of the only SUVs with a monocoque chassis. This renders it with car-like ride and handling characteristics on-road, though low-ground clearance affects its off-road prowess. The punchy engine, very well tuned transmission ratios, firm-but-comfortable ride and nimble dynamics make the XUV unique amongst its SUV rivals. The Toyota Innova has a much better ride though and that is based on a ladder fram chassis, the Tata Aria crossover on the other hand has similar dynamics to the XUV.
Discs brakes all-around provide good stopping power to the XUV 500.Add features like the ABS+EBD (which come standard across the range) and ESP (which are available on the top-end W8 and W10 variants) and the XUV is a confidence inspiring and safe vehicle to drive be driven around in. The XUV 500 rates high on safety thanks to a well designed crash-absorbing shell and active-safety systems like 6-airbags (dual-front airbags are standard) add to the safety layer.
The XUV 500 has a very comfortable cabin, the front- and second-row seats are very well contoured and padded well. The visibility for everyone, except the third-row passengers is very good and the abundance of green-house all around helps make the cabin more airy. Add the beige and black combination interiors with icy blue backlighting, the XUV is a soothing place to be in. The third row of seats is best used by kids on longer rus though, these seats also limit luggage space when they are in position. The soft-touch surfaces make the cabin more premium, while the design all-around is pleasing to many senses. The driver seat is 6-way power adjustable, which improves driver comfort. Features like a tilt-and-telescopically adjustable steering wheel, electrically adjustable and folding ORVMs, reverse camera display on the 7-inch multimedia screen etc. also improve driver comfort.The dual-zone air-conditioning system cools the huge cabin of the XUV 500 very well, even during very hot days.
