First introduced in the international market in 1994, the fourth generation Audi A4 continues to excite both enthusiasts as well as sober owners who prefer to be chauffeured around. Introduced in the Indian market in mid 2008, the A4 boasts of one of the best in class rear legroom, is quite comfortable and yet provides a rewarding drive experience to its owners, especially with the potent 3.2 FSI petrol engine. On the outside, the A4 looks big, modern and very classy especially with those day time running LED lamps. The huge characteristic Audi grille, the oval rings and sharp headlamps, all contribute towards making this one hell of a looker.

In India, the Audi A4 is offered in five different engine options – two diesel and three petrol ones. For oil burner lovers, you get to choose from either 2.0-litre or 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engines. For those who prefer the smoothness of a petrol engine, you can pick up either an 1.8-litre, a 2.0-litre or a top of the line 3.2-litre engine. Other plus points include high quality and fit-finish of the cabin, a very comfortable suspension and a light steering wheel. You also get a driver focussed LCD screen in the central console and Audi’s famed MMI interface. The A4 is assembled locally at the Aurangabad plant. The smaller 1.8, 2.0 engines come with 16 inch alloy wheels whereas the larger 3.0 and 3.2 engines come with 17 inch alloy wheels.

1.8 TFSI: The entry level Audi A4 comes with a 1.8-litre petrol engine that develops a peak power output of 160 horses along with 250Nm of torque. This power is enough to propel the A4 to speeds of upto 218km/h while giving it a 8.6 second timing for the 0-100km/h run. The Audi A4 1.8 TFSI delivers an overall fuel economy of 12.48 as per ARAI. This model’s USP is its low entry level cost

2.0 TDI: Roughly two lakh rupees more than the A4’s 1.8 TFSI model is the line-up’s entry level diesel variant. The engine puts out 145 PS of power along with a very healthy 320Nm of torque. Its performance is quite impressive with a top speed of 210km/h and a 0-100km/h acceleration sprint in just 9.4 seconds. It is very efficient too, delivering an overall fuel economy of 16.09kmpl as per ARAI standards.

2.0 TFSI: For the same cost as the 2.0-litre TDI version, Audi also offers the A4 with a 2.0-litre petrol engine with direct injection and turbo-charger. This engine puts out 182 PS of power with 320Nm of torque. Performance is very good with a top speed of 226km/h and a 0-100km/h run in just 8.2 seconds. The engine is also good on fuel consumption and returns 12.76kmpl as per ARAI standards.

3.0 TDI Quattro: The other diesel engine option with the A4 is the mighty 3.0-litre motor. This V6 engine with common rail technology is powerful (245 PS) and torquey as well (500Nm) and with Audi’s famous Quattro system, gives a very pleasurable driving experience to its owners. Its top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h and the 0-100km/h acceleration stands at just 6.2 seconds. The engine is efficient, averaging 13.96kmpl as per ARAI standards.

3.2 FSI Quattro: The top of the line Audi A4 comes with the fun to drive 3.2 FSI engine. This 3.2-litre engine puts out 270PS of power along with 330Nm of torque. Performance is hair-raising : an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h with a 0-100km/h run in just 6.4 seconds. The Quattro (Audi’s all-wheel drive system) further improves the car’s dynamics and handling abilities. Its ARAI certified fuel economy stands at 10.02 kmpl.   

Expert note: One of the best options at this price point. Comfortable yet exciting, the A4 comes with powerful yet frugal engines.
