As expected, Tata Motors is finally going to manufacture Freelander 2, the least expensive of its Land Rover cars, in India. This long-anticipated step will help the auto maker cut the cost of the car significantly and help in pushing the sales volumes in the local market.
Till now Tata Motors was selling Freelander 2 as a completely built unit at the price range of Rs 38 lakh to Rs 45 lakh. After the beginning of the local production, the base version of the car is expected to be sold under Rs 30 lakh, helping Tata Motors garner a bigger pie of the growing luxury SUV segment of the Indian market.
According to sources, the local production of Freelander 2 will commence at Pune plant by 27 May this year. Tata Motors may use the Freelander platform for local manufacturing of its other SUVs.
