In a move which was expected to happen sooner rather than later, Honda has decided to pull the plug on its Civic saloon. Basically this executive saloon is counting its days till the dealers have finished selling the remaining stock. Having stopped production of the Civic some time ago, it has been revealed recently that Honda has no plans to bring the new generation Civic which has been launched internationally last year.
Though the new generation Civic is sold with a diesel engine in the international market, it has been deemed as not suitable for India.
The biggest reason for this move is obviously the fact that the current Civic does not have a diesel engine and thats why its been left behind by its rivals. In July 2012 only 138 Civic's were sold, a far cry from the 2000 odd sales it used to achieve in a month back in 2007 (it was launched in 2006). That shows how the market has changed today, thanks to constant fuel price hikes. Also not only due to a lack of diesel engine, the current Civic faces a threat from within the family itself- the City. The City proves to be a far better value proposition and customers see little sense in paying more for the Civic.
It seems quite ironic while Honda is leaving this segment, Hyundai is re-entering it with the new Elantra, however unlike the Civic, the new Elantra has a diesel option.
