Toyota , may manufacture its globally popular sedan , Camry , in India , said deputy managing director of Toyota’s Indian subsidiary TKM.This new decision would allow the Japanese carmaker to escape from the huge import duty on imported cars and obviously there is a chance to bring down price of Camry by as much as 20-25% or Rs 4-5 lakh , if the company passes on the entire benefit to the consumer.
Camry is currently imported from Japan and attracts a composite import duty of 110%. At present , Camry sells at a price starting from Rs 21 lakh and competes with the likes of Mercedes C Class and Skoda Superb in the premium segment , which has a market size of 8 , 000 units a year.
TKM deputy managing director (marketing) Sandeep Singh said: “We are contemplating local assembling for Camry depending on volumes. It is one of our flagship products and we are selling in excess of 500 cars per year.”
Toyota is also looking at launching Fortuner sports-utility vehicle (SUV) into the Indian market as the completely-knocked-down (CKD) route , in which the company will assemble all parts of the vehicle in India after importing it. This will help the company to mantain the price range as it would not attract the huge import duty of bringing in fully made car.
TKM MD Hiroshi Nakagawa said , “After a decade of operations in India , we are increasing our focus here. We plan to launch an all-new ‘strategic small car’ platform for India and other emerging markets and would also utilise Indian talent for product development.”
BMW unveils the 5th generation of its flagship model , the all new BMW 7 Series at the BMW Studio at Janpath in Delhi.The new BMW 7 Series defines the benchmark for automotive style , luxury and driving experience and overwhelming visual presence.
The new BMW 7 Series portfolio in India will consist of three models - 730Ld , 740Li and the 750Li. The 750Li will be available from January 2009 and the 740Li and 750Li will be available from mid 2009 in the Indian Market.

The ex-showroom price of 750Li across India is Rs. 93 , 30 , 000 (Ex-showroom price excludes RTO registration charges , tax , insurance , handling charges; Octroi and entry tax if applicable). The 750Li is now available in BMW dealerships across India and will be available in a range of eight paint finishes and eight upholstery designs.The prices of the 740Li and 730Ld will be announced respectively at the time of their market introduction.
Hyundai Motor India launched its all new Sonata Transform , the upgraded version of the globaly acclaimed luxury sedan available in the range of Rs 13.9 lakh to Rs 15.9 lakh (ex-showroom price).
The all new Sonata Transform available in three variants , including a 2.4 petrol , 2.0 CRDi MT and CRDi AT , with a palette of 5 new solid and metallic exterior colors to choose.

The Sonata Transform is powered by the advanced second generation Theta family of gasoline engine which produces a generous 175PS@6000 rpm of maximum power and a peak torque of 23.8Kgm @4000 rpm , resulting in robust acceleration and a quick throttle response. The 2.4 litre , four cylinder , DOHC engine is assisted by a Variable Intake System (VIS) and VTVT technology which makes it highly fuel efficient as well as a refined unit. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.
The diesel variant powered by a 4-cylinder , 2-litre Common Rail engine (CRDi) with a Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) is both frugal as well as an efficient performer. With a peak power of 150PS@3850 rpm and max torque of 32.1kgm@2000 rpm , it generates enough performance to delight the enthusiast.
