Toyota Motor Corp. is planning to launch its hybrid car Prius in India. The car runs on both petrol and batteries. According to Mitsuhiro Umeyama , General Manager of global research and development division of Toyota , around 5% of Toyota’s vehicles sold globally are hybrids and the company would be satisfied if it matched that percentage in India.

Hybrids such as Prius emit half the amount of carbon dioxide than conventional gasoline engines. According to Hiroshi Nakagawa , Managing Director , Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd , Prius may be launched in January 2010. Toyota seems encouraged by the likely cut in import duty of green cars by the Indian government.
