Editorial Review of the Bajaj Discover 125 bike

The Discover brand has been a great success story for Bajaj. The first Discover, in the 125cc guise, was launched in 2005, and right since, it has been creating milestones for Bajaj in terms of sales. It is this motorcycle, which actually has been present in almost all the segments of Indian commuter motorcycling, in the forms of 100cc, 110cc, 125cc, 135cc and even 150cc. Also, the Discover series is the only one which have came tad too close to the mighty Hero Splendor in terms of sales. The Discover 125 is the cheapest 125cc offering from the Pune based manufacturer, sitting below the recently refreshed new generation Discovers, 125M and 125T.

In terms of looks, the Discover 125 is an evolution over the original discover, with modifications on looks limited to the rework done to the front headlamps and rear tail lamp. The front fairing is attractively designed with curvier profile and sports twin pilot lamps at both the upper ends. The tank, though a small unit, is chiseled nicely and keeps your knee tucked in well. The side body panels are simple and are in harmony with the overall design. The rear tail light is a simple unit with an LED layout to it. The black treatment to engine and alloy wheels look smart. The instrument console gels well with the overall modern design, and in-builts a two pod unit with an analog speedometer, odometer and tripmeter in the left circle, and fuel gauge to the right one, with basic tell tale lights positioned separately below the two pods. The switchgear is carried out from the rest of the Discover lineage which now feels dated.
The mill is a leap forward of the engine used in the original Discover DTS-i, with an enhanced DTS-Si technology, which here makes out a maximum power output of 11 PS, while the torque is rated at 10.8 Nm, putting it on par with all the entry level 100cc motorcycles of India. The engine feels punchy for a bike of its size, while it may not give you the 'sprinty' feel of the next gen Discovers positioned above it. The 5-speed constant mesh gearbox is a huge departure from its predecessors with an upshift pattern and slick shifts. The motorcycle performs its utmost important task of delivering till the last drop of fuel pretty well, which stands high at the ARAI figure of 78 kmpl.
When it comes to the suspension and braking, the Discover 125 impresses a lot with light weighted chassis. The front telescopic suspension, with the rear gas charged coil springs, give the ideal ride and handling characteristics for city commutes. It is the highway, where the Discover 125 demands more power from the engine. The drum brakes, both in front and rear, are decent in the amount of feedback they deliver, and to add in some more excitement, Bajaj offers the option of a front disc on this bike.
The Discover 125 is one of the highly successful models Bajaj has ever produced. The motorcycle delivers a lot on the fronts for which it is engineered. Its fuel efficiency is staggering, engine is far more refined from the early commuters from Bajaj and handles perfectly for the city commutes. At such a low price starting form Rs.47,025, it is a brilliant value for money option for those who are strict on their budget.
