The TVS group was founded by T V Sundaram Iyengar in 1911 which is India’s third largest two-wheeler manufacturer employing over 40,000 people. The company manufactures Motorcycles, Scooters and Auto-rickshaws and is the only Indian two-wheeler company to have won the Deming Prize for commitment to quality control in 2002.
Sundaram Clayton was the first flagship company founded in collaboration with Clayton Dewandre Holdings, United Kingdom, to manufacture brakes, exhausts, compressors among the other automotive components. Commercial production of motorcycles began only in 1984 after the technical joint-venture between Sundaram Clayton and Japanese giant Suzuki was signed in 1984. Suzuki partnership was aimed at transfer of technology to develop and design motorcycles specifically for Indian conditions. Renamed TVS-Suzuki rolled out many successful models such as Samurai, Shogan and Fiero. The 18-year old joint venture ended when differences in opinion brewed up and the companies parted their ways after which the company was rechristened TVS Motor.
Over the years, TVS’s growth rate has been phenomenal in terms of size and turnover. Company now runs four states of art manufacturing plants in many parts of India and Indonesia too. TVS Motor has many innovations that changed the Indian two-wheeler scenario in a way or other. India’s first two-seater moped was introduced by the company after which they became the leader of the segment selling over 7 million units. Recently, the company launched India’s first clutch-less bike TVS Jive.
